Music reviews of Monuments & Melodies (2 CD Limited Edition)

Music Review: B-sides disc is pretty decent.
Rating: 3 Stars

Being a fan of Incubus since SCIENCE was released in my early High School days, I naturally went out and bought this album the day it was released. As I said, I have been a fan since SCIENCE, however, I have found their last two albums Crow Left... and Light Grenades, to have left a little more to be desired in the creativity department. Those two albums have found their way to an area of my CD pile that rarely sees the light of day, while SCIENCE, Make Yourself and Morning View continue to get frequent play time well over a decade after they were released. When I heard that Incubus was to release a "greatest hits" album, I was hoping for more of a career retrospective, which would include some songs from great albums such as SCIENCE and Fungus Amongus. That being said, I did preview the track listing before I purchased the album, so I knew what I was getting myself into.

--Disc One--
The first disc is a "greatest hits" and it contains just that, Incubus' greatest commercial hits in addition to two new recordings, Black Heart Inertia and Midnight Swim. The two new recordings are simple and underwhelming, which is what I have now come to expect from Incubus. I don't really care for Megalomaniac and Anna-Molly, but I do understand their presence on the album. What I don't really understand is why some songs from SCIENCE and prior are not included on the album instead of including some newer recordings such as "Oil and Water," "Dig," and to a certain extent "Love Hurts" (which I do realize was a #1 song). I know songs like "New Skin," "Certain Shade of Green," "The Warmth," and "Aqueous Transmission" weren't commercial hits, but their inclusion would have made this a more well rounded review of Incubus' career thus far.

--Disk Two--
On to the second disc-- the reason I purchased the album. The is a collection of B-sides, rarities, crappy Prince covers, etc... I was looking forward to this disc as I was hoping it would contain older style Incubus offerings. A few of the tracks contained on this disc I had previously heard.

The highlights of disc 2 for me:
Neither Of Us Can See
While All The Vultures Feed
Pantomime
Anything
Punch Drunk
Admiration
Monuments and Melodies

All of these songs have a vintage Incubus sound and feel to them which made them appealing to me.

Look Alive is a decent listen. The acoustic version of A Certain Shade of Green pales in comparison to the original. Martini is not my favorite and Disc Two is rounded out by an abhorrent cover of Prince's Let's Go Crazy which is barely listenable and the idea of it should have been aborted before it was even conceived.

--Overall--
I can't give this album 3.5 stars so I'm giving it 3 because it doesn't deserve 4. Like I said, a major disappointment for me was that the "hits" disc didn't contain songs from older Incubus albums. As a reviewer on another website said it is like Incubus feels their career begun when their songs started getting ridiculously played out on the radio and they started to sell out areas, which many of us who have been fans for more than 4 years know is, in fact, far from the truth. I do look forward to new Incubus work in hopes that they will again embrace their experimental side. However, I do fear that their best days musically ended on October 23, 2001 when Morning View was released and that the groundbreaking and innovated sound that I used to love about Incubus has been permanently replaced with a watered-down and commercially pleasing mediocrity.
