Music Reviews of Speak for YourselfMusic Review: super awesome Rating: 5 Stars
i hated this album based on the first few songs i heard from it. 'hide & seek' annoyed me, 'just for now' seemed too frilly and 'daylight robbery' was too loud. and yet nearly everyone in my online musical world was raving about it. i gave it another try and picked a few random songs that i hadn't heard yet.
but now i LOVE it. it's one of my favorite albums of the past few years.
i think it was the dreamy piano in 'the moment i said it' that hooked me. and then i heard 'have you got it in you?' and that drew me in even more. and then... and then i heard 'the walk' and it won me over time and time again.
i played it for some friends. we always rocked out to 'healock' in the car and i started to love (and see the beauty in) 'hide & seek' when we were driving back from the mountains. every song drew me further in, even the ones i didn't like on first listen. 'the walk' is my absolute favorite.
i saw immi in concert on sunday and that brought everything together. i am officially a disciple.
this album can strike a chord in anyone. it's like she's living in my head... the lyrics are instantly quotable. she is a musical genius. just do yourself a favor and fall in love with this album.
Music Review: Wow! Rating: 5 Stars
Imogen Heap is one of two artists I discovered in the past several months(the other is Laura Veirs), who are so good I became an instant fan of both (well, actually, Ms. Veirs took a slightly longer time to love, but that's for another review; I mention her here because the two women have a similar fascination with electronic sounds). I am not familiar with Heap's previous work, but if "Speak For Yourself" is any indication, I should investigate, because this collection is perfection from start to finish. Blessed with a gorgeous voice that can be breathy like Dusty Springfield's, and extremely flexible, like Alicia Keys (only higher pitched than either), Heap writes and arranges her own songs, and they are stunning. With swooping, diving melodies, and electronic arrangements that constantly make unexpected turns, there is something to keep the listener engaged every second. This album did not leave my CD player for a month after I bought it, and it continues to make return visits. Favorite songs are "Closing In," "Clear The Area," and the amazing and beautiful, multi-tracked vocoderized "Hide And Seek," which uses no other instruments, and doesn't need them. I can't wait for Imogen Heap's next one!
Music Review: Thankyou for 'Speaking' Rating: 5 Stars
When i first heard 'Hide And Seek', i new it sounded familiar. I instantly fell in love, all the while realising that it had been featured on an OC episode...anyway.
I went out and got this album and was VERY pleased with the result! It wasnt what i expected after only hearing 'Hide And Seek', which seems out of place on the album but is probably one of the best songs. I got a set of electronica pop inspired songs which pleased me.
Stand out tracks include 'Goodnight & Go', 'Daylight Robbery', 'The Walk' (probably the best song on the album), 'I Am In Love With You' and of course 'Hide And Seek'.
As soon as i heard 'Hide And Seek' i immediately thought of Bjork's early song 'Violently Happy' (my favourite of her songs) with its similar voco-recorder vocals, however Heap claims it to be her own. Each song demonstrates Heaps extraordinary vocal style, eclectic composition, and, the thing that makes most of the songs, her poetic and sometimes cryptic lyrics!
Overall this is a must have album from an artist who deserves way MORE recognition! Thanks to her songs being featured on the hit tv show and on its soundtracks, she might finally get the popularity she deserves!!
Music Review: Great album - BAD COPY PROTECTION Rating: 5 Stars
Be advised that this disc has Sony's ill-designed copy protection program on it. Once the program is installed on your computer (which it does automatically, without even giving you notice or the option to decline), your ability to make legal personal copies of the music will be compromised, and the program itself will open up your computer to potential virus threats and CPU drain. It's ridiculous that Sony has chosen to punish those who support their favorite artists by legally purchasing their music.
I feel very bad for Imogen Heap, who self-financed this excellent record and now must suffer from Sony's poor decisions. If at all possible, purchase the UK or iTunes version of this record. The music is worth it. From the strange, haunting "Hide and Seek" to the dense, ecstatic "Daylight Robbery," this record shows that pop - particularly of the electronic/synth/digital variety - need not be cold, poorly sung, or lyrically vacuous (see: the Britney/Simpson-types of the current pop scene). Imogen's production, voice, and lyrics are fascinating. I highly recommend the record - just not the dangerous and dishonest software that is unfortunately bundled with it.
Music Review: I can't stop listening Rating: 5 Stars
I can't stop listening to Hide and Seek. I've written a few of these reviews, usually only when I feel exceedingly strong about a recording, but considering the absurd amount of money I spend on music, the ratio of records I buy to the number of reviews I write is relatively low. I like to think of myself as an audiofile, a dedicated fan of good music; I've heard a ton of music and been to a ton of shows.
Since I stumbled onto Imogen Heap's Speak for Yourself, I can't stop listening to the fifth cut, Hide and Seek. Between the vocals, the production, the digitization that I've never heard used to that extent, I've been listening to it over and over. As soon as my Ipod ticks out the last seconds, I rewind and start over again.
I haven't felt this kind of compulsion to listen to a song since I was a kid and couldn't control my impulses. Hide and Seek is a truly hypnotizingly beautiful song, and I would be remiss if I didn't inform potential buyers of the possibility of not being able to stop listening.
I'm giving it five stars, but I haven't given myself the opportunity to listen to the remainder of the record.
