Music Reviews of Il DivoMusic Review: Il Divo- Divine Singer (couldn't have put it better myself) Rating: 5 Stars
These four men truly are divine singers. Three(Carlos, David, Urs) have beautiful operatically trained voices. Seb, the French pop singer, adds a very warm, informal, easy-going air. This first album has much variety. From the sweet, romantic songs like Every Time I Look at You, and The Man You Love, to huge, sweeping, dramatic finales of Senza Catene, Feelings, My Way, and Regresa A Mi. Each piece is tastefully chosen and profoundly moving. Besides... the four fellas don't look so bad themselves. Ok... maybe that was an understatement. They are all very good-looking. But Urs Buhler, the Swiss tenor, *THUD*, he is a work of art... So, you have four gorgeous guys with gorgeous voices singing gorgeous pieces of music... what more could you ask for? The songs are either so romantic they're tear-jerking, or so powerful they almost leave you stunned. These four guys deserve to be the superstars they are. Five Stars.
Oh, and the standout tracks are Feelings, Every Time I Look At You, Man You Love, Senza Catene, Dentro Un Altro Si.... They're all standout!!!!!
Music Review: Elvis Lives! Rating: 5 Stars
Okay, I'll admit it. I'm not a huge music fan and certainly know virtually nothing about opera, and up until a couple of weeks ago, I had never even heard of Il Divo. But then one day, I was in a book store during lunch and heard an incredible song titled, "The Man You Love" playing on the in-house system and knew right away I had to find out who it was and get the CD.
Most of the music is in operatic Italian and I have no idea what they are saying, but the sound is extraordinary. What little bit of English is here makes it more than worth while for this mono-lingual listener. I can listen to this stuff all day!
I don't know which one of these guys it is, but when listening to their rendition of "My Way" I'm not kidding, one of these guys must be Elvis making a come back! The similarity in voices is striking and the way he carries out the notes almost identically to the way Elvis did is amazing. As I said, I'm not a huge music buff, but I try to buy a couple of dozen new CD's each year and this is the best I've found in a very long time.
Music Review: Impressive Rating: 4 Stars
Ever since I read about the search for these talents worldwide, and who was behind the production I knew it was going to have a great outcome. I was not only suprised, but impressed by the harmonious combination of these four, very diferent voices. Each and every one of them has its own style and merits, but the magic really works when they sing together. Awesome arrangements and great re-interprepations in songs such as "My Way", "Unbreak my Heart", "Nella Fantasia" and the Italian version of "Unchained Melody", a song which can also be heard in a similar arragement by the group Amici, in their album Forever. Nevertheless, the songs picked for this album appeal to different audiences and they have all been executed excellently. Particularly grandious is "Passera" and particularly gut-wrenching is "Hoy Que Ya No Estas Aqui- Spanish Version of "As Far As Any Man Can See". This album is proof that the "opera goes pop" fashion is not even near over. I cannot wait for a second album, and to see them on tour, which of course it's a added attraction; their looks!
Music Review: Pop+Opera.... Popera! Rating: 3 Stars
Vocce Alta... "Sing in loud voice"
The supergroup of international operatic talents pooled together by the brainchild of Simon Cowell. Lots of potential to enter the market that is rich with this genre in the CD racks containing Josh Groban, Russell Watson, and Ronin Tynan. Should have worked........
But some of this album falls flat. Instead of interpreting classic opera, they have mostly done an operatic karaoke show. Sticking in a couple of NOW compilations and singing the hits in high operatic voice. It works a few times really, but not all the time. "Feelings" comes across just like this, a classic tired overworked tune sung in an operatic style.
This is not to say the whole album isn't enjoyable. BEAUTIFUL VOICES abound on this CD, my beef is the song selection only. If you like Josh, Russell, and Charlotte Church.... you may enjoy this new outing into pop-opera.... popera lol. Enjoy the Italian version of "Unbreak My Heart". There is more greatness to come from the male divas.
Music Review: struggled to get through it Rating: 3 Stars
I received this CD as a gift from someone who raved about the music. I am sad to say I was disappointed right away. I had to force myself to listen to the entire CD. This is good music??? The music choices were poor... Unbreak My Heart whom everyone remembers was recently sung by Toni Braxton. Unchained Melody... good grief, how many people need to sing this song. Uck! And Frankie's good ol' My Way was somewhat butchered by Il Divo. Come on! Is there nothing better to sing out there? These guys have exotic voices, and I would've been much happier to hear them sing more exotic tunes.
Also, a cohesive sound was missing. It sounded too butchered and choppy, not smooth and easy. Their voices don't complement each other well and they don't sound like a group... they just sound like 4 guys singing songs and trying to out-do each other. They obviously have some (not great) talent but these songs don't do them justice. I have retired this CD back to its case for now... I'll stick to Andrea Bocelli and Josh Groban.
