Music Review: Beautiful at first, drops after a third of the show...

Now, this review is probably just for newcomers to the group, as I was. If you've bought every album and loved every minute, buy this DVD. It's a beautiful presentation (even though there is some poor camera work), their voices are (mostly) amazing and the crowd/group chemistry works great.
I don't own this CD/DVD. I was at my uncle's house, and after dinner we (two uncles, two aunts, my grandmother, my fiancé and myself) sat down at his living room to watch the Il Divo DVD. Now, I, being a 23 year-old Brazilian man, had never heard of the band. I enjoy the classical/opera piece as much as anyone in my family, probably even more than my 67 year-old uncle. Everyone thought they were amazing. I did too, until about a third of the album. I really need to stop rationalizing everything in life...
Almost every song in this album starts the same, with alternate, soft vocals from each of the four members of the group, until they begin to sing harmonically, a point in which you can no longer hear the french singer (his voice is noticeably the weakest) and ends with the group, at a central position, taking a step forward while singing a chorus, I suppose (since I knew most songs, but singing them in Italian or Spanish completely takes the fun of listening to great songs like My Way, Unchained Melody or The Winner Takes it All), and just singing in crescendo until a single note is held for the longest possible period of time. That's it. Most songs are like that. Soft at first, harmonic in the middle with a big climatic ending (which, again, the voice of the french singer is impossible to be heard). Of course, it is a group of four singers, and the emphasis of their tracklist would always be the power of their voices, but it gets tiresome to start each song knowing that in the end there'll be an 'epic' finale with each member of the group extending his voice to its limits. It becomes "Just look at how these guys can sing!" instead of "Just look at these beautiful songs!". In the end it's more about the showmanship than the actual music, the biggest culprit of that being Spanish baritone Carlos Marín, which spends the majority of the show with an open shirt, a raised brow (one of them, mind you) and a cheeky smile. Don't get me wrong, his voice is perfect for the kind of music being played here, but if it's about the music, there's no need to look and act like a cross of Bruce Campbell and Julio Iglesias in their earlier days.
It just echoes of pretentiousness... I have no problem with that if it's accompanied by great music. When the music is used as an instrument rather than a focus, it can get repetitive, and annoying. I voiced my opinions that moment, most treated me either as a jealous fiancé (unjustifiable, since my first words after the DVD was over was to turn to my wife to-be and ask her if that's what she'd want for christmas - it's been hell to find something for her) or a man too young to understand this kind of music. If so, fine... Forgive me for my rambles. But in the end of the day, I still prefer the original version of every single song they've played on that concert.
