With the full realization of how popular 'Il Divo' currently are ( and understanding how protective their fans are ) I know I'm going to get slammed for this. But after spending my hard-earned dollar on a product that was obviously hurridly put together to capitalize on their huge world-wide appeal I feel somewhat justified in being miffed at my impulse purchase and falling prey to one of the oldest marketing tricks known to man. I must stop doing that!
Obviously these guys are extremely popular right now. Their freshman disc has sold millions the world over but how anyone can justify releasing a product that smacks little more then rank opportunism is beyond me. " The Christmas Collection " while, to a degree, is not without its charms but exists solely to capitalize on the huge fan base that supports these four gentlemen. Christmas cd's are always suspect and generally are produced for no other reason then to seperate us from our money. Rare is the recording artist who dreams of putting together a 'classic holiday disc' one day! Anyway, recording companies, such as IL Divo's Columbia, understand that releasing a Christmas offering to unsuspecting, but loyal, fans/music lovers is the proverbial 'taking candy from a baby.' We love the group, know many of the tracks that are found on the back of the disc and feel 'warm and fuzzy' safe in the knowledge that we will thoroughly enjoy our purchase. Plus, if you are anything like yours truly, and really love holiday music you are, at times, guilty of not being too choosy in adding to your Christmas disc collection. Heres my rub with " The Christmas Collection. " Granted now all four of the guys in Il Divo can truly sing but the whole affair seems so thoroughly disjointed and hastily thrown together thats its difficult to believe that any real time and thought went into gathering songs for this disc. In fact, it almost seems impulsive! For starters, theres only ten songs to be found here! Thats criminal. It also shows how quickly Columbia threw this offering together and how little they think of their consumer. I don't blame the boys of Il Divo for that simply because I suspect they will generally do what is asked of them to keep this group marketable and popular. But I do feel short-changed and taken for granted. And to a degree even used.
Now, at the risk of sounding like Scrooge, the contents to be found within " Christmas Collection " while appealing is strange to say the least. Others have mentioned it and I will too. Since when did " Somewhere Over The Rainbow " become a Christmas classic? It actually sounds as though it had been recorded perhaps for their intial disc, rejected, and then added on here to fatten the rather thin play list. " White Christmas " is nice though it moves at a glacial pace and won't make you forget Bings rendition. Many of the tracks here seem to carry certain religious overtones and while thats nice it seems oddly solemn for a disc that is supposed to be joyful and celebratory. Again, my initial response, while cynical, is that this is little more then a quick 'cash grab' by Columbia and an attempt to keep this group in the public eye until their sophmore offering is released. Its just a shame that Music has become little more in this world then yet another cold, calculated business that depends upon cheap maketing ploys, naked ambition and rank opportunism. Il Divo will continue to be popular and I may even purchase their next disc but thanks to " The Christmas Collection " I will be much the wiser consumer for it.

BMG. 2006.If you thrill to the soaring operatic voices of The Three Tenors (and imagine every Christmas comes with its own orchestral majesty), Il Divo has made this disc for you. The four GQ-handsome male singers were handpicked by American Idol's Simon Cowell for what seems to be their ability to sing opera and classical music with the hint of a pop sensibility. Their Christmas Collection features 10 standards (although the last time Santa looked, he wasn't quite sure "Over the Rainbow" and "The Lord's Prayer" were part of the Christmas canon). Still, it' hard not to imagine these emotionally stirring renditions as part and parcel of the reverential treatment the four finely sculpted voices bring to more exact seasonal fare such as "O Holy Night," "Ave Maria," "Panis Angelicus" and even "White Christmas." Dave Arch's predictable choral and orchestral arrangements are aimed right at the sweet spot where sophisticated church choir music and traditional classical music meet, with few surprises other than the dash of Irish folk music that colors "When A Child Is Born." In the end, for people who have never heard of Cowell and his cohosts (would Paula Abdul really have picked the tenor guy for this group?!), this collection will prove just as rewarding for them as the best-selling Idol records are for fans of the TV stars. --Martin Keller
