Music Review: "I'm bored, I'm chairman of the bored...."

"New Values" was probably not well received by Iggy Pop fans at the time of its release. Although it gained minor success in the UK, I suspect fans were expecting an album identical to that of "Lust For Life." But things had changed for Iggy since the release of "Lust For Life." He moved out of Berlin, and signed in a new record contract with Arista Records in London. (The New York City office refused to sign him.) Many in the music business probably believed that Iggy's prime was behind him. In fact, many would argue Iggy never really had a prime. But there are the ones like Blondie and the Sex Pistols who where inspired by The Stooges to become musicians. While the music industry tried to boot Iggy out, the new Punk Revolution in the UK gave Iggy sole credit for inspiring them. Although the youth credited him, his peers did not. Outside of David Bowie, rock idols like Ian Hunter continued to mock Iggy, claiming "he had no talent." But Iggy had something to prove. With help from James Williamson, a new found producer, Iggy proved that he had talent and when the chips were down, he could blow everyone away. 'Tell Me A Story' is a great choice for the first track. It seems to fit right in as the first track, and I love it! The title track, although no the strongest, is certainly worthy of being a title track because of its topic and surprising lyrics. 'Girls' is a song where Iggy calls back to his days as one of The Stooges. 'I'm Bored,' my favorite, with its infamous lyric of "I'm the Chairman Of The Bored," Iggy shows his sense of humor and delight on this one. 'Don't Look Down,' later covered by David Bowie in 1984 on Bowie's album "Tonight" (that album featured many Iggy covers in a failed attempt for Iggy to gain back songwriting credits). Although Bowie's version is a reggae-style, Iggy's own original version is very rock based and extremely clever. 'Five Foot One' is described as being the first single that never was. I can see why it is described this way, and how much more popular "New Values" would have been, especially in the USA, if 'Five Foot One' had been the first single. "Curiosity" is a song that deals with our parents' favorite quote of "Curiosity killed the cat." "African Man" talk of the racism Iggy probably grew up around in Detroit. "Chains"and "Pretty Flamingo" are superb choices of bonus tracks! Bravo!
