Music Review: Echo's Front Man Solo Again...

Ian McCulloch embarked again to step aside from collaborating and composing with Will Sergent; for those who don't know Echo And The Bunnymen's tragic events in the late '80s which broke the band nearly in half and sent this band to its collective knees. Such raw talent still laid dorment with the surviving band members. The remaining musicians improved over the years and the fruit of the various solo projects yielded very impressionable projects of musical colaboration.In Ian's latest solo project, "Slideling", there's a few good songs that merit some air play on American Radio and Sirius as well as XM satelite radio. The first track "Love In Veins" is a driving, up beat and distorted guitar churning and strumming allegro tune. The Lyrical content does not really stir controversy, so again, the potential for this CD to get air play is a high probabilty. The other songs that have good potential are: "Slideling"; "Baby Hold On"; "Seasons"; "Another Train" ( a rock steady song with a strumming Accoustic Guitar);"High Wires"
; "She Sings (all my life)"; and "Stake Your Claim".
This has CD has good potential and it's good as any U2 recording project. Last words, sure as the rain falls on the weekend, the professional scribes may have rhetorically spun this CD as a want-to-be U2 recording with flourishes of Lou Reed influences. No matter who the musician happens to be, borrowing a peer's sound is a form of a compliment. Only in the song "She Sings(all my life) I hear the lyrical line and Ian singing: "do-do-do..." very Lou Reed-ish and only one song smacks a compliment to U2 and that's the song: "High Wires". It's just this reviewers opinion that this new CD project is very fresh with smooth production and mixing makes it a good purchase for the fans of Echo And The Bunnymen and just maybe some albeit late airplay like a month late.

Cooking Vinyl. 2003.Given the Phoenix-like post-millennium resurrection of Echo & the Bunnymen, Slideling is a rather unexpected and rather belated third solo offering from their loquacious egotist of a frontman. It's clear, however, that you may be able to take the Ian McCulloch out of Echo & the Bunnymen (not a good idea if judged by past experience), but you can't take the Echo & the Bunnymen out of McCulloch, even if his abstention in this instance is merely temporary. Despite auxiliary assistance from both Jon Buckland and Chris Martin of Coldplay and actor John Simm, circumventing the Bunnymen's shadowy, superstitious pop signature was not going to be easy for one of that band's two integral players. And so Slideling has it's quota of slyly atypical squinty-eyed rockers, among them "High Wires" and "She Sings (All My Life)," two numbers that not only divulge a lingering debt to David Bowie and the Velvet Underground, but also to prior Bunnymen compositions like "Do It Clean" and "Seven Seas." Slideling is McCulloch's best solo offering by a distance. --Kevin Maidment
