Music reviews of Switch

Music Review: INXS...enough said...but here's some more...
Rating: 5 Stars

Switch. . .well the name is literally true. However, this CD, while sung by a new band member, will fit perfectly into the INXS catalogue & sound.

Listen, & you hear the music that is: INXS. You hear a voice that flows within this music. Jason (JD) Fortune slides right into this band of `brothers' sounding natural & smooth in this solid effort. He is no imitation: Mr. Fortune, rather a natural fit. INXS should sound like INXS. The singing voice in each of their albums is complementary & additive to the music. Whether it was late, great, Michael Hutchence, or their newest member, Jason (JD) Fortune; the voice & personas are a perfect fit for their funky, groove worthy style of rock. Their music oozes sex, sensitivity, interesting & varied rhythms. This cd continues in this same vein. This is good thing people. INXS is back!

The tracks, while compiled quite quickly following the completion of the recent audition process (the reality show Rock Star: INXS-yes this was an audition people; an oddly public 'reality' show version of an audition, but an audition nonetheless), show great promise for their future & is a good listen from track 1-11 (& through 15 if you are diligent enough to compile the bonus tracks). The audition & current charting hit, Pretty Vegas is undeniable, & announces the reemergence to old & new fan bases alike. Watch the video, & it even appears this refreshening of the line up, INXS seems to have discovered the fountain of youth, shaving years off in appearance, as if they were reborn.

Moving on to the rest of the tracks: Devil's Party(& the remix bonus trk) show off even more of the potential future of this band, that Pretty Vegas hinted at. This song too, like Vegas, was co-written by Fortune, & it makes you want to dance. Catchy, fun, & sexy. And yes, if you were watching Rock Star, this was the trk they began during the last 'clinic'...this may be their next single, if so, I can only say, that INXS' version of an audition process, was very fruitful!

Moving on, you have fun (& strip worthy) Hot Girls, & another Fortune co written track, a slower & funkier song: Never Let You Go...lets not parse the lyrics on these songs folks, they are fun songs, not words to live your life by. They bring a smile to your face, & maybe a tap to your foot, & the hooks are fun, not serious...I mean, check the top 10 billboard, littered w/plenty of fun, slim on the deep meanings of life! Hot Girls'...enough said, these boys obviously don't take themselves too seriously. & Never Let You Go, 'move down south & marry a dancer'...is this silly?...it doesn't matter, its fun, groovy & catchy...This is possibly a surprise favorite of mine. The music is different, yet still strong. The band sounds good, Jason sounds good...its all good, not so clean, fun.

Next, I'm going to give you my take on the more 'sensitive' ballads on this album...Afterglow & God's Top Ten...The first written for Hutchence(RIP), the second for his daughter: Tiger, who lost not only her father, but tragically also her mother; this song is dedicated, I think to all three in some form or another. So, these ballads are not: Never Tear Us Apart, but that is ok. Honestly, they make me happy & sad. First, because I think INXS is moving on, but not forgetting what they were & are, & that will always include, to some extent, Michael. Personally, it makes me both happy & sad , because it brings to mind my own fathers' passing a few years back, dealing & moving on from that. Knowing the meaning of these songs to the band, enhances them. So maybe they are bit sappy & syrup worthy, but they are nice songs, & they seep in to your subconscious. I actually really like the music to God's Top Ten, but questioned the use & arrangement of the duet. However, on reflection of where this song stems from (the passing of 2 parents & dedicated to surviving daughter), well, lets say even the arrangement grows on you. Afterglow, is reminiscent of some songs of other artists, past & present, but it is not redundant, rather done in a new & subtly lyrical way. Listen, you will appreciate them.

Now skipping ahead to the add'l 3 bonus tracks: Easy Easy, Let's Ride, & Amateur Night...These are good, I'm not quite sure why they didn't make the initial version of the CD, maybe it was time/production constraint, maybe it is purely a promotion...INXS surely scored $$ off me, as I basically paid avg $10 per song for the 4(including DP remix) tracks, as you had to buy the whole album each to get them, but that is another story...Specific to the songs: Easy Easy, it is the song they closed off the Rock Star show with, it is fun funky & classic sounding INXS, & folks it is catchy on repeated listening...Let's Ride, good grooving tune, would be fun to drive to, & Amatuer night: I think this may be my favorite of these bonus tracks. It is the most unique sounding of all coming from/assoc w/this album...It is a bluesy rock song that really harks back to some earlier sounds & shows the bands diversity overall...listen to it.

The remainder of the 5 songs are all good listens as well...some may even be single worthy. Like It or Not, Us, Hungry, Perfect Strangers, Remember Who's Your Man. These are all a bit different, but they round out the cd nicely. My opinion puts Perfect Strangers as the leading song of this bunch, single wise...but we'll see...Us is funky fun, & good intentioned with a catchy beat & lyric, Hungry is a driving rythm power building song, Remember... is a fun listen, straight up, & Like It or Not, grows on you, trust me...

So, you may have guessed, two thumbs up here. The tough part, is I think, that this is just the (new) beginning, & my expectations will be even higher for their upcoming winter/ summer concerts, & next album. I am settling in, & plan on continuing to be a life long fan. I have faith I will not be disappointed. INXS, good on ya' mates :)

Description of Switch

Inxs have just released their long-awaited brand new studio album, 'switch', through epic records.'switch', the band's first studio album since the death of michael hutchence in 1997, features the band's newly appointed vocalist, canadian jd fortune. The album was produced by robbie williams' former songwriting partner guy chambers. The dual disc edition of the album contains a 25 minute "in-the-studio" piece with the band, as well as featuring the entire album in enhanced stereo!
Switch, INXS's first release since re-fashioning itself as a prime-time reality show spectacle, could earn somebody an A in sociology. A poll of inter-generational hipsters is bound to show that the degree to which you like it correlates directly to your age. The over-30 crowd--those who once shimmied to the late Michael Hutchence's hugely sexy vocal turns on hits such as "Need You Tonight" and "What You Need"--might have a hard time dissing it, mainly because J.D. Fortune succeeds so unswervingly at imitating him. On the other hand... there it is: imitation doesn't always sit well with the generation that recently ripped into Paul Rodgers for parading around stages as Freddy Mercury, and as much as 30-something rock sophisticates will want to relive INXS's heyday, they'll do so suspiciously without Hutchence at the helm. Younger fans, on the other hand--the ones that discovered the band on reality TV--can enjoy J.D. Fortune and co. without reservation, and they will love this disc best. For them, "Devil's Party" (reminiscent of "Original Sin") will arrive without reference, thereby making near-impossible funk-rock coolness seem new. Ditto that effect on "Pretty Vegas," a vampy number co-written by Fortune that owes its guitar riff to "Devil Inside." "Like It or Not" and "Hot Girls," two other standouts, also go a long way toward peeling away the poser tag Hutchence fans may want to affix to Fortune, but may not entirely remove it. For some fans, Hutchence's "Never Tear Us Apart" plea is a personal thing. --Tammy La Gorce
