Music reviews of The Lord of the Rings: Motion Picture Trilogy Soundtrack (3CD & 18 Trading Cards)

Music Review: Excellent Collection of Oscar Winning Material
Rating: 5 Stars

Before The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, I never paid much attention to Howard Shore, but after I heard his excellent score, I started paying more attention. The Fellowship was the first of the Trilogy and as such, Shore established his themes for the landbreaking film. The music revolves around five basic themes: The theme for Isengard, the theme for the Black Riders/Mordor, the theme for the Fellowship, the theme for the Ring and the theme for The Shire. The range of music is extremely wide. The Black Rider theme is a very dark, gothic theme, while the Hobbit theme is very light and playful reminiscent of an old countryside folktune. The theme for Isengard is very strident percussion and brass with emphasize the evil building under Orthanc. The Fellowship theme is a very bold theme, only heard in its full glory 2 times on the soundtrack on tracks 11 and 13. The hints of most of these themes play in almost all the tracks of the film, however all of these tracks stand alone. Choir is used effectively to heighten the emotion of any particular track. The cd is over 70 minutes long, and I wish it could be longer simply because the music is so enjoyable. Shore's score to this epic film belongs on the top ten score's of all time and it truly deserved the Academy Award that it won. It is simply magnificent!

The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers soundtrack is 1) an excellent score cd 2) a worthy companion to its predecessor the Academy Award winning The Fellowship of the Ring. Howard Shore returns to write the music for the next chapter of Jackson's films. The Two Towers has a mixture of new and old themes. Enya, a fixture on the Fellowship soundtrack is not featured on the Two Towers soundtrack. The Fellowship theme, the Isengard theme, the Rivendell theme, the Mordor theme, and the Shire theme all make reappearances, but added amongst them and comprising most of the cd are new themes. The Rohan theme is a very Vikingish theme replete with strings and percussion. Shore has the ability to vary the mood of this theme, usin it at the triumph of Theoden's reawakening as well as at the defeat of the evacuation of Meduseld. Treebeard's theme, is a very soft kind of "forresty" music with a chorus to give it a mysterious air. Shore uses heavy percussion to make the theme more effective. Arwen's theme is different from the first soundtrack, first because there is no Enya and second because its more of a melancholy love theme. Gollum's theme also doubles as the Ring theme from the first film, but the way Shore plays this theme reflects the 2 sides of Gollum's personality. As in the Fellowship, Shore uses different choirs very effectively, giving the elves an ethereal sounding choir, etc. The Two Towers is an excellent cd, and while it does not surpass the Fellowship of the Ring soundtrack it is its equal.

After hearing Howard Shore's stunning conclusion to Perter Jackson's epic Lord of the Rings trilogy, I can only state one thing: Excellent. Excellent doesn't really do justice to the magnificence of Shore's work. Shore presents a much more mature version of work. All our favorite themes are there: The Fellowship theme has now evolved into a wistful yet powerful fanfare for Aragorn. The Shire theme makes a return as does the Hobbit theme, both played magnificently by James Galway. Also returning is the Mordor theme, it's menacing notes now grown into a malevolent force. The Rohan theme also makes a brief reappearance, while the elvish theme comes to a full circle, representing Aragorn as he gets his sword in the track Andruil. The beginning of the cd is much more playful than that of the Two Towers, but it swiftly transforms into a majestic fanfare for Minas Tirith and Gondor which is among the greatest moments on the cd. Once again Enya does not sing on this cd, but in a suprisingly powerful decision, Billy Boyd aka Pippin does appear, singing briefly for Lord Denethor, capturing the rift between the Steward and Faramir. In track 17, The Return of the King, Shore takes a listener on a journey of all his developed themes for our heroes. Like his previous two Lord of the Ring scores, Shore writes so the listener see's. What I mean is that the music and the movie work so well together, that one actually envisions the beacons being lit at Minas Tirith or Eowyn swinging Merry unto her horse as the Rohirram ride out to Gondor. Faramir's deadly attack on Osgiliath and the appearance of Theoden at dawn come vividly to life, but most moving and most emotional is track 15, beginning with the Fellowship fanfare as Aragorn exorts his soldiers to fight and ending with a new theme as Sam picks up Frodo and says, "I can't carry It for you, but I can carry you!" It's enough to bring the listener to tears. As for Oscar-winning the song at the end by Annie Lennox, it captures triumph and tragedy of the conclusion of the Lord of the Rings. I was only disappointed by there not being more music to hear. I truly hope a complete soundtrack is released containing all the music from the films.
