Music Review: LOTRs music for Classical Music enthusiasts (details)

I was very pleased with this *Lord of the Rings Concert*. My chief observation is that overall, this artful rendition is notably less emotive and more straightforward than the Howard Shore versions played by the London Philharmonic. For this specific reason, this presentation will probably appeal less to The Lord of the Rings - The Motion Picture Trilogy (Platinum Series Special Extended Edition) fans and more to traditional Classical Music lovers.
There are two discs in this set. The music draws from each of the three Peter Jackson films [above] and is played by The City of Prague Philharmonic and sung by the Crouch End Festival Chorus, Nic Raine conducting, (David Temple, Choirmaster.) Tacked onto the end of Disc Two are three so-called *bonus tracks*. They include the vocal versions of *Gollum's Song*, *May it Be*, and *Into the West*. (The instrumental versions of these three works are included within the main body of the music.)
The total time for the concert (on the two discs) is 1:28:47, not counting the three bonus tracks which run a total of 13:32.
I'll get dinged for this from zealous LOTRs fans (of which I am one) but I feel compelled to comment that *Gollum's Song* represents the single minor wart on the entire LOTRs film project which was otherwise perfect from my view. That song is musically inconsistent with the entirety of the remaining music and, in the film version, is raspily choked out as a sort of closing credits pop tune. The version on this CD (sung by Helen Hobson) is slightly improved but it still fails to tenon with the overall genre of the remaining filmscore as far as I'm concerned. Yet there are many LOTRs fans who rave about this song as their favorite of all so life is not the same for everyone -- I simply skip over that track when it comes up.
The vocal version of *Into the West* isn't quite as articulate as the original rendition but it's still passable. This is one composition which cries out for a more emotive singer than Helen Hobson.
My favorites are both on CD Number One: *The Riders of Rohan* [3:53] and *Evenstar* [3:38] are nothing short of spectacular. It's just my subjective opinion but I think that each of these articulate works stand as improved versions of the originals, each of which was also superb.
Various orchestras around the world are beginning to play what is being dubbed as *The Lord of the Rings Concert* (arrangements differ) but I'm convinced that this one will continue to stand as one of the very best. Highly recommended.
