Music Review: Most compelling account of "Romantic" Symphony on disc!

This 2-CD set features performances of music by Howard Hanson, all conducted by Gerard Schwarz, mostly with the Seattle Symphony Orchestra. I will limit my remarks to the performance of the Second Symphony, "Romantic," the work I am most familiar with. Schwarz's account of this work with the Seattle SO is simply the best one I have ever heard. Hanson's own account with his small orchestra is good and certainly authentic (at 27:53 his tempos are closest to those of Schwarz), but the sound quality and the size of the orchestra leave a lot to be desired. The two other "competition" performances in digital sound are Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops and Leonard Slatkin and the St. Louis SO. (There is also a budget performances with the Jena Philharmonic, which I have not heard.) Kunzel's recording (at 25:54) features the best sound of all, but the weakness is his tempo choices: he is simply too fast. This doesn't mean that he rushes through it to the point of distorting the score; rather, the mystery of certain development sections is missing because they are taken at too brisk a pace. By contrast, Slatkin (at 30:34) is a bit too slow. Everything certainly sounds beautiful but he lingers too much over parts of the score, creating an overall performance that is not as exciting or as taut as it should be. The perfect performance is Schwarz's: at 28:20 minutes, Schwarz has gotten the tempos just right: nothing feels rushed and nothing feels overly dragged out. He and the Seattle players capture the ebb and flow of this work perfectly. The sense of mystery and foreboding in the very beginning of the symphony and in the slow movement are captured perfectly. The triumphant finale, with one musical gesture organically leading to the next sounds exactly as it should. The entire orchestra (one of the very best US orchestras not counted among the "top 5") seems on fire here and they play the work with obvious gusto. When the symphony ends, you feel thoroughly satisfied, like everything that Hanson was trying to communicate has been expressed loud and clear. The sound quality is also outstanding.

This recording of the Second Symphony originally came on a single CD with the First Symphony. That CD was a top seller and won several awards as well, but it is out of print. This 2-CD set is the only way to get Schwarz's masterful interpretation of the Second Symphony. It is worth buying just for that one magnificent performance.
