Music Review: Sleepytime Magic

If you're a Mazzy Star fan looking for more "Fade Into You" moments, this is probably going to disappoint you. That said, if you're a fan of the ambient music of artists like--to use some examples--Brian Eno and The Album Leaf, you're likely going to enjoy this narcotic, drowsy masterpiece. On first listen, this is not all that far removed from Mazzy Star's autumnal drone-pop. But instead of the simple, fuzzy, VU-style electric guitar-and-drum backing that Mazzy relied on, songs like "Butterfly Mornings" hover in your consciousness, on Sandoval's husky, sensual voice and whispery filigrees of acoustic guitars, dreamy bells, and a whole lot of empty space. "Drop" and "Suzanne" are heroin-sleepy takes on the classic Nancy Sinatra & Lee Hazlewood sound. However, the hypnotic, dubby "On The Low" is the highlight, sounding the most like Mazzy Star, but expanding on their established sound in an exciting way. An absolutely classic late-night headphone record, this is an entrancing listening experience, though I will admit that it's hard to stay awake for the later tracks.

Import LP edition of the ex-Mazzy Star vocalist's 2001 solo album. Bert Jansch plays guitar on two tracks. 11 tracks in all.Anyone familiar with Mazzy Star's ethereal, hypnotic music will find singer Hope Sandoval's debut album with the Warm Inventions a welcome return, with its haunting, spaced-out odes to melancholy. It's been five years since Mazzy Star's last album--the rich, evocative Among My Swan--and while Sandoval has appeared on records by the Jesus and Mary Chain and the Chemical Brothers, the At the Doorway Again EP, released at the end of 2000, was the Warm Inventions' first offering. The band--half of which is Colm O'Ciosoig from My Bloody Valentine--favor altogether sparser songs, which suffer somewhat from the absence of David Roback's lush, entrancing slide guitar, which made Mazzy Star so beguiling. Nonetheless, there are delights to be had: Sandoval's voice continues to drip with ennui and a tripped-out nonchalance while the delicate, tinkling songs on display here are eerily romantic, employing soft, beautiful acoustic guitars and occasional strings. Highlights include the relatively upbeat "On the Low," with its gentle swaying rhythm and occasional splashes of harmonica, and the dreamlike "Around My Smile," which features an intoxicated Sandoval singing, "I've got it going on."
