This CD combines all of the material from an LP originally entitled "The Magic Bow" which featured violin favorites performed by the outstanding violinist Michael Rabin and most of a second LP entitled "Strings by Starlight" which presented light classical favorites performed by the Hollywood Bowl Symphony Orchestra conducted by Felix Slatkin. All of the music is well known to music lovers -- and generally very popular -- and is well performed. The sound is quite good, despite the material coming from the LP era. This is one of my most treasured CDs.
Before ending this review I feel compelled to comment on the outstanding, but regrettably currently not well known, violinist Michael Rabin whose playing constitutes about half of the material on this CD. Michael Rabin quite simply was one of the greatest violinists of the 20th century -- equal or superior to all other violinists of the recorded era. Although Heifetz is generally regarded as the greatest 20th century violinist, Rabin was fully equal to him in technical prowess and surpassed him in artistry. Unfortunately, Rabin died in 1972, before his 36th birthday, and many current music lovers may not be familiar with his name or aware of the high regard in which he once was held. Everyone who is familiar with Rabin's incredible skill and artistry will undoubtedly want -- or already have -- this CD. But, if you are not familiar with this genius vioinist, I beg you to purchase this CD -- or perhaps the 6-CD set of Rabin's complete recordings for EMI which is scheduled to be re-released shortly.
