These songs are taken from the earliest surviving German-language sources for the new courtly songs of the Renaissance. Although earlier music in this style does not survive, there is evidence that it had already progressed beyond folk styles. Alongside these new musical forms were older monophonic styles perpetuated from the minnesangers of the medieval era, and soon perfect by the meistersingers, here exemplified by the Hildebranston.
Sources for the present recording are: Augsburger Liederbuch, Buxheimer Orgelbuch (transcribed here for other instruments), Glogauer Liederbuch, Lochamer Liederbuch, Mensuralkodex des Nikolaus Leopold. Known composers represented are Paul Hofhaimer (1459-1537), Heinrich Isaac (c.1450-1517), Mönch von Salzburg (c.1400), and Hans Buchner (1483-1538).
