Music reviews of Santa Claus Lane

Music Review: Santa Claus Lane
Rating: 3 Stars

I'm going to review each song on this CD:
Track 1- What Christmas Should Be (4.5/5): While the album was put out in 2002 and the newer tracks on the CD are from 2002 this song was written in 2003. The song fits Hil's voice well and has a good message. The ending of the song (the background singers singing "merry Christmas, merry Christmas" over and over) is a bit too-ah, shall we say...annoying?

Track 2-Santa Claus Lane (5/5): This song is very fairy-tale-ish. I wonder who came up with the idea of having a girl taking a walk and then being transported into another town. The song is cool. My favorite part is the chorus. The lyrics of the song are catchy and easy to remember. This is one of those songs you get stuck in your head.

Track 3-Santa Claus is Coming to Town (3/5): For some reason I don't like this song that much. Perhaps it's because the verses of the song would've been better off without the background singers overpowering Hilary's voice and making it sound totally different. I guess the song just sort of gets annoying after almost four minutes of listening to it.

Track 4-I Heard Santa on the Radio (4.5/5): The only reason I'm knocking half a point off the score of this song is because I wish Hilary was the only one singing. Christina Millian has a really strong voice and paired with Hilary's voice the song just sounded-well, OK. I feel like most of Hilary's earlier songs had more background vocals in them. Compare "So Yesterday" or this song with "Underneath This Smile" (from "Hilary Duff"). Anyway, this song is catchy, fun to listen to, and just might brighten up your day a little bit (even though you might not really hear Santa on the radio! )

Track 5-Jingle Bell Rock (3/5): Again, too many background vocals, mostly in the beginning of the song. (I must admit that in ¾ of the verses of the song Hilary is singing without much background vocals.) I don't know why I don't fancy this song.

Track 6-When the Snow Comes Down in Tinseltown (4/5): I like the beginning of the song where Hilary Duff is talking but the scribbling sound in the background sounds totally fake (which it is). This is one of the few songs that is an original song that wasn't a cover. Very fast tempo, a song you can just dance crazily to.

Track 7-Sleigh Ride (3/5): Er-sort of annoying. Cool piano music, though! (By the way, I guess I'm biased because if someone other than Hilary Duff was singing these songs I would give the lower rated songs a much lower rating. ) Interesting song.

Track 8-Tell Me A Story (3/5) I don't care much for rap. So this song is OK (Hilary sounds great when it's her turn to sing.) I'm just glad that Hilary is the one rapping!

Track 9-Last Christmas (5/5): Gotta love it! Likable beat...the words I can live with...easy to remember lyrics (gotta have that)...and overall it's just a great song! I really like the way Hilary's voice sounds in this track. One of my favorite songs on this CD!

Track 10-Same Old Christmas (5/5) I really like this song! It's just a song telling about what Christmas is like every year and how good it is to be with your family. It's a good song to sing to when you're driving to your Grandma's house for Christmas Eve. Pump up the volume!

Track 11-Wonderful Christmas Time (4/5): The music box at the beginning of the song is cool but where does the little kid fit in? This song has a pretty fast tempo. You can also dance to this song. It's kind of a rock song (well, not really: it's more pop) but that's OK. It's still a good song!

Overall rating: 44/55
Good album, but could be better.

There are new tracks and old tracks on this CD, which is good and bad. Some songs don't fit Hilary's voice well (i.e. Jingle Bell Rock).

If you are a big fan of Hilary of course you'll love this CD but if you aren't a fan of Hil then you'd better go find another Christmas CD. The best song on the CD (in my opinion, of course) is What Christmas Should Be. The song sends out a great message.

Even though this CD definetly could have been better it was still a good try.

Description of Santa Claus Lane

Celebrate and have fun this season with Hilary Duff as she sings her favorite holiday songs with a pop twist! This must-have holiday album is packed with 11 songs by Hilary Duff, including duets with Lil' Romeo and Christina Milian. With holiday tunes by Hilary, you will wish it was Christmas year-round!
Hilary Duff, the winsome star of the Disney Channel's Lizzie McGuire, makes her singing debut with a rather frothy mix of original songs and old holiday chestnuts--only these chestnuts aren't roasting on an open fire, they're sugarcoated, like everything else on this pop-light album. Duff, who looks like Jessica Simpson, and sings like Mandy Moore, sticks close to the tried-and-true versions of Santa Claus is Coming To Town," "Jingle Bell Rock, " and Sleigh Ride," adding little to the holiday music canon. The album only perks up when Duff's guests appear: Christina Milian pushes Duff to greater heights on the crisp and rhythmically innovative "I Heard Santa on the Radio," and Lil' Romeo adds some spiky dynamics and humor as he raps through "Tell Me a Story (About the Night Before)." --Jaan Uhelszki
