Music reviews of Most Wanted

Music Review: "Most Wanted" a great Hilary collection for fans and newbies alike!
Rating: 5 Stars

I reviewed the Collector's Signature Edition of this album when I bought it in August. Now, I am going to sound like a total freak, which I guess I am, but I purchased the standard edition of this album at Target today so I could have both versions. It sounds silly, but I am a huge Hilary Duff fan and I am sending one of my booklets away to get autographed. So anyhow, I thought I would give this version a track by track review, as well as talking about some of the bonus material available for true Hilary Duff fans if you buy it at Target. Let me begin by telling skeptics that this is NOT a greatest hits album. Hilary has repeatedly said it is not meant to showcase her brief stint in the music business from a greatest hits perspective. It is merely a collection of all of Hilary's biggest hits and non-hits, some the same as the previous two albums and some remixed, as well as three brand new songs recorded exclusively for this album. Basically, Hilary is just so busy that she doesn't have time to do a brand new album, and so this is the best thing she could give fans to tide us over until the real new album comes. So stop saying she is trying to pretend she has enough hits to do a greatest hits album because it's simply not true. That said, here's a track by track of this edition of the fabulous "Most Wanted."

1. "Wake Up"- the first single from this collection. Similar to previous hits like "So Yesterday" and "Why Not" but with a bit more of an 80's pop edge to it. Hilary wrote this with the Dead Executives, AKA her boyfriend of one year Joel Madden and his brother Benji, both from Good Charlotte. The lyrics are an insight into Hilary's life in the celebrity glass bubble, as she talks about not only the hardships of being famous, but the perks and fun times too. This is just a great catchy song to turn up loud and sing along to while you're having fun with your friends or even alone. Magnificent!

2. "The Getaway"- from Hilary's self titled sophomore release, this is truly one of the best songs from that album. Coming right after the bubbly pop feeling of "Wake Up," this song is a little darker and edgier as it tells of a young woman who is trying to let a past love go but is having a hard time doing so. I especially love the constant metaphors between what the song is really about and cars. Like all of Hilary's songs, this has a catchy beat you won't be able to get out of your head after hearing it!

3. "Beat Of My Heart"- The second of three new songs recorded for this album, this was also written by Hilary with The Dead Executives. Now, I know there is some criticism surrounding this song being too repetitive. I understand where people are coming from but once you get used to it it's not so bad. The song is really good once you get used to it- it mixes pop, dance, techno and even rock in an irresistible way. I also really love the lyrics of this songs, as it's basically all about empowering yourself after going through a hard time because of a break up.

4. "Come Clean (remix 2005)"- One of Hilary's biggest hits, this remix doesn't dissapoint. Similar to "Beat Of My Heart," it has a very techno-pop feel. Unlike the original version, this song is pretty fast paced and relies a lot on vocal effects- think Hilary's version of Cher's "Believe." However, it is just as enjoyable, if not more enjoyable, than the original and still remains one of my favorite Hilary Hits.

5. "Mr. James Dean"- one of the three songs Hilary wrote for her second album ("Rock This World" can be found in remix on this album, while the controversial "Haters" is nowhere to be found). While it was never one of my favorites on "Hilary Duff," it really does sound more in place on this album and I have since come to love it just as much as any other Hilary song. It has a very hard-rock feel and it's basically about a girl kicking a guy out of her life for being a fake.

6. "So Yesterday"- another of Hilary's biggest hits. Like "Come Clean," this is featured on Hilary's first album, "Metamorphosis." This song is what made quite a few people (including myself) fall in love with Hilary's music, so it is only appropriate that this version, in all of its original glory, is featured on this album. It's still just as catchy and empowering as it was two years ago! Way to go Hilary!

7. "Metamorphosis"- the title track from Hilary's first pop album. It was really good on that album but here it feels a bit out of place. I think it could have been remixed to give it a more mature feel. But when all is said and done, I still know all the words and I still love singing along to it, so it's not too bad. I am actually glad it is included, like all of the other songs Hilary has written for herself (except "Haters"). I think all of the songs she has written, especially the new ones, are indicative that she could become a really good pop songwriter.

8. "Rock This World (remix 2005)"- also written by Hilary and featured on her second album. This version is even better than the original, which is hard to beat, believe me. It has a much more authentic rock feel, with more emphasis on the guitar solos towards the middle and end of the song. Fabulous!

9. "Break My Heart"- the third new song included and also written by Hil and D.E. This song is my favorite song on this album, as well as my favorite song Hil has ever recorded next to "I Am." It's such a great breakup song, and it has a very punk rock feel, much like Good Charlotte or even Avril Lavigne. With this song, Hilary moves into semi-new territory, while still utilizing the same catchy hooks and irresistible charm that made her a music star. It might help that when I saw her in concert on August 24 at the Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio, she sang this song while pointing right at me. It was really awesome!

10. "Fly"- one of the best songs Hilary has ever recorded, as well as a very successful single. This song really shows Hilary's vocal range, and how much it is improving with each song she records. This song is so inspirational and it never gets old no matter how many times I listen to it.

11. "The Girl Can Rock"- this isn't listed as a remix, but it is a bit different. The beginning is totally different and the entire song has a more rock feel to it. This song is one of the best live songs Hilary has done, because it has such a fun, upbeat feel to it, and it's really best to hear live. It's a gem and I'm glad it's included (especially for fans who didn't have the Cinderella Story soundtrack).

12. "Our Lips Are Sealed (with Haylie Duff)"- also from ACSS, this song is a fun remake of the Gogo's 80's classic. Hilary invited big sister Haylie, also an actress and aspiring singer, to sing on this one. Not one of my favorite Hilary songs, but still good, and a top ten hit at that. It just has a very positive message that I think young people need to hear.

13. "Why Not (remix 2005)"- This song will always be a favorite in the hearts of fans and this remix is pretty good because it doesn't really change what made us love the song in the first place. There are so many versions of this song that it's hard to say which one is my favorite, but the song itself will always be close to my heart and it's a great way to close the album.

Now, as most fans are aware of, there are two versions of this album. There is this version and the Collector's Signature Edition. Which one you decide to buy should really be based on how big of a fan you are. If you're a pretty big Hilary fan and have her earlier music, you should definitely get the bonus edition. But, if you're a Hilary newbie and this version's like 10 bucks, you should buy it just to expose yourself to her music. True fans should note that the signature edition does feature four extra tracks- a brand new song called "Supergirl," techno remixes of "Jericho" and "Party Up" and an acoustic version of "Who's That Girl." Also included in the signature edition are four photo cards, each bearing a photocopied signature and the lyrics to the bonus songs. Like I said, it's up to you which one you buy, but buy one of them! You seriously will not regret it. This album is perfect for both Hilary's biggest fans (like myself) and people who are not really familiar with her music but like a song or two. I will also note that if you buy either version from Target you can get two Sessions at AOL performances, "Do You Want Me" and "I Am." It only lists one on the CD but they are both there. These two songs alone made the purchase of this album worth it for me-- I am a huge fan. These live versions are TOTALLY different from the originals and are definitely worth the extra money for her fans. I know my thoughts are kind of scattered but another thing I wanted to say is that Hilary is an executive producer on this album, which is way cool because this means that, at only 17, she is in charge of her own music. Way to go Hilary! You're doing a great job! And another thing- for all you Hilary haters out there- I've said it before and I'll say it again- SHUT UP! I appreciate the fact that you are utilizing your freedom of speech and for whatever reasons you don't like Hilary, that's your right. But she does have a very large and supportive base of fans who will be there for her no matter what you say, and hearing you say bad things about her only fuels our fires. Whether you like her music or even her acting abilities is really not the point, she is a great role model not only for our youth, but for everyone, and that's rare in the entertainment business. Furthermore, those of you who say she has no talent should look at pop music over the last twenty years. Hilary has far more talent than many musicians I will not even name due to the fact that I don't want to be a hater either. Hilary is putting out good movies and great music and keeping her audience entertained. If she didn't have any talent or a fan base she wouldn't have a NUMBER ONE ALBUM ON BILLBOARD'S HOT 100 FOR TWO, GOING ON THREE WEEKS! Way to go Hilary, that's quite an accomplishment. And Hilary will only continue to sell records and be a huge superstar because she deserves it. WE LOVE YOU HILARY- WE, YOUR TRUE FANS, NOT HATERS. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK AND I LOOK FORWARD TO YOUR NEXT RELEASE!
