Music reviews of MetamorphosisMusic Review: Newest Britney Rival?? Not Quite There Yet Rating: 2 Stars
Hilary Duff, a sixteen-year-old Disney actress, is mostly famous for her role as Lizzie McGuire in the Disney program of the same name. However, she seems to be one of the few teen pop singers that people think has the potential to have as much or more success than Britney Spears. Like many actresses (J Lo and Jennifer Love Hewitt come to mind), Hilary decided to pursue a singing career and released two albums to date. The first one, "Santa Claus Lane" was a Christmas album containing mostly old holiday favourites sung in virtually that same manner as the originals. Almost a year later, Hilary returned with her non-holiday debut "Metamorphosis", which most fans of Lizzie McGuire picked up upon release.
The album starts off with the single "So Yesterday", a syrupy song that had a lot of exposure on the Disney channel and some success on other music channels. The song is lyrically quite weak, which is almost expected of young pop singers, however there is no reason why lyrics couldn't be stronger than "if the light it off then it isn't on". The song alternates from being oddly appealing to extremely annoying and only the bridge is consistently enjoyable. Afterwards comes another single, and by far the album highlight, "Come Clean". The song has a somewhat haunting quality about it and is lyrically the strongest track. The lyrics are actual somewhat deeper than you'd expect from Hilary and draw attention away from the fact that Hilary is far from a strong vocalist. The next track, "Workin' It Out" seems like it's supposed to be inspirational but it falls flat. Mostly, the song suffers from an incredibly weak chorus which is repeated at least four times. Also, Hilary sounds more like she's half-speaking, half-singing instead of actually singing the song.
The next song, "Little Voice" seems to be a favourite of fans but I find it absolutely irritating. Hilary's vocals (if you can call them vocals, again she's half-speaking the lyrics) are incredibly annoying (just listen to the way they are sung/spoken). Lyrically, this song is also exceptionally weak ("you smell so sweet just like my perfume"). As well, there is a chant of "la,la,la," etc., which seems to be put in solely to make the song longer. The song after, "Where Did I Go Right?" gives the listener a glimmer of hope that the album is going to improve. The lyrics are somewhat deeper but not nearly up to the level of "Come Clean" and Hilary's voice actually sounds great in this song. The bridge once again is particularly strong. Just when things start to look up however, we come to "Anywhere But Here" which tries to be deep but fails miserably and ends up not making much sense ("I'm falling through the door, flying cross the floor"). Hilary sounds particularly young in this song, which is really not a good thing.
"The Math", which is up next, also seems to be a favourite of fans and many people seem to disregard the fact that the song has nothing to do with the actual subject of math. The song seems to be an attempt to do an Avril-esque (note that I am not saying Hilary is trying to be Avril) rock song which does not work in the slightest because of the abysmal lyrics. ("Is it a minus or a plus, does enough equal enough"). Next up is the equally dreadful "Love Just Is", which, like many of the other songs on the album, suffers from poor lyrics and weak vocals. The verses seem to be decent lyrically however the chorus is incredibly poorly written. ("Love just is whatever it may be, love just is you and me"). After that comes "Sweet Sixteen" which is far too repetitive, not only in the chorus but also in the verses, for my taste. Upon reading the lyrics, I have no idea what the song has to do with being sixteen. The lyrics are once again subpar (though that's a bit of an understatement) with lines like "my blonde hair is everywhere" and "drivin' down to the club where we go to dance".
Next comes another upbeat attempt at a pop-rock song (at least that's what it seems like) however, like a majority of the songs on the album, "Party Up" suffers from poor lyrics that are simply confusing in places. ("This could be the start of something, why don't you party up?"). Also, there is something vaguely familiar about the music in this song. Afterwards comes "Metamorphosis" which is equally confusing because it seems like a metaphor gone wrong, as there are mentions of butterflies and cocoons that don't fit in with the rest of the song. As well, the chorus doesn't seem to have anything to do with the rest of the song. ("Metamorphosis, whatever this is..."). Lastly, there is a spoken verse at the end, which appears to be listing any word that rhymes with "transformation". Next up is the short song, "Inner Strength" which seems more like a work-in-progress than a real song. It is far too short to be a song but is a nice, inspirational touch. Lastly, there is the first single "Why Not" which I cannot stand however everyone seems to love it. The lyrics are too trite and the vocals too irritating for my taste.
Overall Mark: 2/5
Hilary has a long way to go before she can possibly rival the popularity of Britney Spears. Granted Hilary has a large fanbase because of her role as Lizzie McGuire but her lyrics are weak, even for an album of pure pop, and her vocals are even weaker. It is fairly obvious that there are computerized or at least layered in many places. However, you've got to give Hilary credit for making an entirely clean, kid-friendly pop album though she could do with much better songs. I would take "Come Clean", "Where Did I Go Right" and maybe "So Yesterday" and call it a day.

Description of MetamorphosisLimited Japanese edition of the TV/film/pop star's #1 debut album features 15 tracks including 2 bonus tracks, 'A Day In The Sun' & 'Girl Can Rock'. Includes 8-page full color photo book & a 20-page sleeve booklet with song lyrics, credits & many more color photos. Copy Controlled. Avex. 2003. She may have played a teenaged girl mistaken for a pop star in The Lizzie McGuire Movie, but after releasing a Christmas album in 2002, and crooning two songs on the movie?s soundtrack, Hilary Duff looks like she means business. The only trouble is, she doesn?t sound like it. Although dubbing her first album Metamorphosis, the disc is anything but. Her singing is as coy and kittenish as her on-screen persona and she mugs her way through most of the 13 songs with charm and aplomb, but little natural singing talent. But to her credit, the actress has managed to cover a multitude of vocal sins by hiring a team of crack producers, who double her voice whenever possible, giving many of the tracks the rather anthemic feel of a cheerleading squad. The best songs on the disc are the three masterminded by the Matrix, the same production team that oversaw Avril Lavigne's hit disc and they give the lissome actress?s singing some attitude and grit, like on the infectious and spectacularly bratty "So Yesterday," and the cleverly conceived "Math," complete with heavy metal guitar riffs. But Duff is not inhabiting that saucy jailbait territory staked by Britney Spears. At the ripe old age sixteen, she?s much more Barbies than bustiers. --Jaan Uhelszki
