Music reviews of Hilary Duff

Music Review: Hilary Finally Gets An Edge! (Even With No Voice)
Rating: 4 Stars

Don't get me mistaken. This CD is 98% bubblegum, while her first effort, Metamorphosis, was 200% bubblegum. Hilary will NEVER, EVER have a superstar, real talent, Pat Benatar/Kelly Clarkson-like voice; the only reason she made this album was because she was a tween Disney star and a marketable one at that. She can't act, she sings like a mouse, some Pepto Bismol, Vicks Vaporub, and a squeaky toy all mixed together and stirred in a blender, but her tunes are wildly and insanely catchy. While I'll admit that she might be a teensy bit out of her comfort zone with a few of the heavier tracks, I'm such a big fan of minor-keyed, almost-depressed pop that I don't care what her other fans say, I prefer this moody pop/rock more than her pure bubblegum anyday.
Some songs that fit this moody pop/rock description include the megahit (and my personal favorite) Fly, Weird, Mr. James Dean, Underneath This Smile, Dangerous To Know, the awesome track Who's that Girl?, The Getaway, Haters, and Rock This World. All these songs are SO much better than the cotton-candy fluff that filled her first album, but her second CD seems to be following a trend that was prominent around that time. All the four major singers in the pop music world today-Hilary Duff, Ashlee Simpson, Lindsay Lohan, and Kelly Clarkson-released first and second albums that each copied the other's style. Notice how all four of these singers' first albums fit the more upbeat, jumpy pop music with colorful album covers. Hilary Duff's first album Metamorphosis cover's colors were dark green and colorful featuring a pop-laden fluff-fest as tracks.
Ashlee Simpson's Autobiography color featured colors VERY similar to Hilary's Metamophosis with the same dark jewel green along with dark purple and blue making for another colorful album filled with such happy tunes like Pieces Of Me and Autobiography. Lindsay Lohan's cover for Speak featured pink, black, purple, and blue with jumpy, thumper style tunes that almost sounded like a monotone repeating over and over. Kelly Clarkson didn't copy anyone and stands out miles from the rest in terms of real talent, but her Thankful cover was white and had a positive feel featuring soulful, catchy tunes. However, the second time around for all artists was a complete 360. Hilary Duff came out with this minor-keyed-style album that featured with her hair in front of her face, while Ashlee Simpson's second album I Am Me showcased a pitch-black background with Ashlee dressed in all black in which the black-background shadows her face, with Ashlee just staring with a dead goth/ghost expression while arrayed in uber-dark makeup plastered all over her dimly-lit face.
Kelly Clarkson went for a depressed, Bohemian-Goth style with her Breakaway album in which she's featured with a hair-in-her-face freeze-frame that highlights her shiny nose ring. Not to be outdone, Lindsay Lohan went for the most extreme album cover yet on her A Little More Personal (Raw) album: a Victorian-style 1900's coif arrayed on her head, no clothes whatsoever featured on her body except for a pair of dark, beaded underwear or skirt (who knows?); of course her arm is over her front in light of a dark grey/almost-black background that features her sitting atop a chair with a blood-red X painted across her naked back. However, all these singers' upbeat, pop-style first albums were more successful than their wanna-be goth-pop second albums, with the exception, naturally, of Kelly Clarkson, whose albums are 100% genuine and who could sing Sesame Street while still getting positive, critically-acclaimed reviews. Hilary's second album, was in my opinion, better than her first, and featured more serious and catchy songs.

1. Fly-An awesome song with an amazing, minor-keyed tune! This one is argurably her best song, next to Crash World, which is featured on the Cinderella Story Soundtrack, and has a more serious and mature sound. Congrats, Hilary! 5/5
2. Do You Want Me?-A somewhat annoying song that has an OK beat. It is, however, the song that made all the middle-aged, blonde, Hilary Duff-approving moms all around the country listen to the track, place their hands on their hips, get all huffy with a few "Oh, my word!"s thrown in, and then declare "I-will-not-let-you-keep-this-CD" as if each word in the statement had a period after it, before stomping out, CD in hand, of course, in a huff. 3/5
3. Weird-A cool, powerful edgy song that made tons of 11-year-old girls patrol up and down the hallways of their schools shouting "Don't Ya Think It's Weird?" every ten to twelve minutes or so. 4/5
4. Hide Away-A beautiful, sad song with a catchy tune that I like listening to. It's one of the more serious and deeper songs on this CD. 4/5
5. Mr. James Dean-A very deep, intense song. This song is BY FAR the most rocky and heavy and could almost, almost, be classified as rock. Finally Hilary gets an edge!!!! 4/5
6. Underneath This Smile-Another good minor-keyed song with a sad, depressed feel. However, it's still a better one to listen to. 4/5
7. Dangerous To Know-This song is edgy and intense, but not like Mr. James Dean. It rocks hard, and Hilary sounds like she really feels the anger and sadness in the song. 4/5
8. Who's That Girl?-ONE OF THE BEST SONGS ON THIS Who's That Girl? rocks hard and strong, and it's one of Hilary's best songs EVER!!!!!!!!! 5/5
9. Shine-Not a bad song. It wants to be more upbeat while fitting the goth tone of the album, and it doesn't work. Basically, it's not superb. 2/5
10. I Am-One of those crappy inspirational "I am special, I am beautiful" songs aimed toward her 8-year-old audience that hold their hands together in a star-gazing postition and pray "I hope I'll be beautiful" and who still cling to Barbies, sleepovers, and braiding their friend's hair. 2/5
11. The Getaway-Awesome! Another amazing, fast-paced song like Who's That Girl?! The Getaway rocks hard and makes up for the previous two easily. 5/5
12. Cry-An almost country-style song that sounds sort like Hilary's speaking into a fan. It wants to be Fly and doesn't succeed at all. 3/5
13. Haters-Hilary's highly-publicized ode to Lindsay Lohan, who was releasing her first album Speak around this time. Lindsey's ode back to Hilary was her hit track Rumors, but in the long run, neither Hilary's Haters nor Lindsay's Rumors lived up to their expectations. 3/5
14. Rock This World-Another rock-hard song that emphasizes girl power in a fabulously edgy style. While not as good as Fly, Who's That Girl?, and The Getaway, it's right behind them in the coolness factor. 4/5
15. Someone's Watching Over Me-A not-too-bad ballad that isn't hideous but basically tells the listener what the last three songs are going to be like: souped-up ballads. 3/5
16. Jericho-A song that wants to be upbeat and yet it still sounds like a ballad and, judging by her vocals, it appears Hilary's using that fan instead of a microphone again here. 3/5
17. The Last Song-A song that epitomizes the phrase souped-up ballad, and, no big surprise here, it's written by her souped-up ballad writing sister, Haylie Duff. This song is so short and sucks so bad that it doesn't even deserve the honor that the title of the song gives it. It wants to make Hilary out to be a serious recording artist, instead of just another teen queen with a pop-music recording deal. 1/5

Description of Hilary Duff

DUFF HILARY HILARY DUFF
Even when Hilary Duff is at her most un-Lizzie McGuire-like, it's impossible not to like her, as she proves on this reinvention-themed, girl-grows-up album. Free her from the constraints of the teen-queen slumber party scene and she'll crank up the guitars and "Fly," as she does on the feel-good first single; give her a minute to reflect on life as a multi-hyphenate (in her case TV princess-movie star-pop goddess) and she'll come clean with "Underneath This Smile," an introspective winner not lacking--and yet not reaching--for sunshine, or "Who's That Girl," an unapologetic embrace of self-contradiction. Songwriters Diane Warren ("I Am") and Charlie Midnight, whose contributions to Duff's last album don't seem so yesterday as yet, pitch in, as does Hilary's star-in-her-own-right sister Haylie (the boyfriend-blasting "Mr. James Dean"). If there's evidence of the mixed-up lovable kook millions of teens once modeled themselves after here, it is only in the title: Hilary Duff may be the follow-up to the 5 million-selling Metamorphosis, but the real metamorphosis for Miss Duff takes place here. --Tammy La Gorce
