Music Review: Not bad at all, and sometimes really good.
Rating: 4 Stars
This disc does not deserve the panning that some here have given it. Of course, this is an "economy" recording. Therefore, although a good portion of the instruments are real and very capably played with some pretty good arrangements, there is not a full orchestra and the larger orchestra parts are sythesized. Yet, the music rises above this and is occasionally brought into a more modern light (note the rather good arrangement of "Superstar") with some interesting use of synth. The performances (uncredited: Lee Erving as Judas, John Cabar as Jesus, and Dominique Spicer as Mary) range from passable to notable. Erving has the perfect voice for a Judas and is actually creative in his interpretation of "Heaven On Their Minds." Cabar, though only appearing three times, manages to portray the role with adequate feeling. Spicer is a slight disappointment because she, though having a nice voice, does nothing new and mainly just mimics Claire Moore from the 20th Anniversary London cast.
