Music reviews of Sea Shanties

Music Review: The Hawkwind connection....
Rating: 4 Stars

First of all, I would like to thank amazon.com for introducing this album to me, for if they did not keep putting this on my 'recommended for you' list, I would have never heard of it, and eventually heard it. This is a wonderful album. That it took twenty five years for it to finally be released on CD is remarkable, even though...better late than never, eh?

Sea Shanties was High Tide's first album and it came out in 1969. The line-up consisted of Tony Hill on guitar and vocals, Peter Pavli on bass, Roger Hadden on drums, and last but not least and possibly most, Simon House on violin (and possibly keyboards). Simon House would later join Hawkwind in 1974 for their album Hall Of The Mountain Grill. Ironically, this album sounds more like the heavy, space rocking, free-form jamming albums that came BEFORE Hall Of The Mountain Grill. Tony Hill's low, bass/baritone does sound a heck of a lot like Jim Morrison's voice, even though Hill had more of an upper range. I would say Hill also sounds a bit like the singer for Steppenwolf.

Musically, these guys were extremely heavy. Comparisons have been made to The Stooges, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, early Neil Young, Jimi Hendrix, etc.. I would say these guys also sounded a bit like pre-Love It To Death Alice Cooper, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Curved Air and King Crimson (when Crimson had David Cross in the band). These last three bands mentioned also had violin players in them, and back then, it was not uncommon for progressive rock bands to have violinists. What makes High Tide different than these other bands (at least to me) was how the violin was on the same level as the electric guitar, in terms of loudness and soloing time. House has never played the violin so aggressively! And Hill himself was technically an outstanding guitarist. The way these two traded licks and played lines in unison was truly incredible and made for some challenging, but rewarding listening. And the rhythm section don't do anything too fancy, they just lay down a solid, but noisy groove.

The first song, 'Futilist's Lament', is the most immediately likeable song. It is easily the most catchy tune and it is my favorite song on the album. Hill sings some interesting, gloomy lines to a complex, but melodic vocal line, House plays his violin through a wah-wah pedal, the guitar riffs are some of the catchiest on the whole album, etc... A very heavy, and extremely enjoyable song. After this, we get the nine minute guitar and violin jam 'Death Warmed Up', which is the heaviest track on the album. This song hits you over the head immediately and keeps bashing away at you until the very last second. You will feel exhausted after hearing it.

Fortunately, things get a little quiet and relatively mellow for 'Pushed, But Not Forgotten'...at least for the first minute or so! House's violin playing during the softer sections reminds me of David Cross's violin line for 'Lament' by King Crimson. I love the title!

For the second half, my favorite tune is 'Walking Down Their Outlook', which, for the more quite and pyschedelic moments both for the singing AND the music, reminds me of The Doors Waiting For The Sun album....songs like 'Love Street' and 'Wintertime Love'. The heavier parts remind me of 'Still No Air' and 'Below Your Means' from Easy Action by Alice Cooper. One of the more progressive songs on the album.

The last two songs don't stick in my head as much as the first four, though they are far from bad numbers, and will undoubtedly, like most of the album, become more attached to my brain the more I listen to them.

This is a great album! Thanks amazon!

Description of Sea Shanties

Continuing in its ongoing mission to return underappreciated vintage psychedelic gems to the marketplace, Sundazed presents High Tide's beloved 1969 British cult-classic, Sea Shanties--as it was originally meant to be heard, in the 12" vinyl LP format.

A one-of-a-kind collision of psychedelia, prog and heavy rock, Sea Shanties embodies the darker edge of psychedelic rock, while presaging the wave of heavier combos that would soon emerge in Britain. Although it's been out of print in the United States for decades, Sea Shanties has attracted a fervent cult following in recent years, making this release a particularly timely one.

Originally issued in the heady musical atmosphere of 1969, Sea Shanties, was the first album by High Tide, a quartet fronted by guitarist/singer/songwriter Tony Hill, formerly of the legendary garage combo The Misunderstood. High Tide embodied the eclectic attitude of its era, combining psychedelic influences with a harder, darker edge that's reflected in Hill's ominous lyrics and the band's raw, punchy sound. High Tide's most distinctive sonic trademark was the unique interplay between Hill's slashing, effects-laden guitar and the aggressive, distortion-heavy playing of violinist Simon House (who subsequently joined Hawkwind and recorded with David Bowie).

For this LP reissue, Sea Shanties has been meticulously mastered from the original stereo analog masters to faithfully preserve the sound of the original album. In keeping with the high standards for which Sundazed has become known, the album is pressed on high-quality, high-definition vinyl, with complete original cover art that reproduces artist Peter Whitehead's elaborate gatefold design.
