Music reviews of Purcell: The Masque in Dioclesian / Dido and Aeneas

Music Review: Dated sonics, quaint interpretation, superior performance
Rating: 4 Stars

One hears mid-century performance practices in this interpretation. For those who are weary of increasingly minimalist, "authentic" period readings, this release, long unavailable, should be worthwhile.

Deller's take on Dido has a Handelian dimension. All the vocal parts, especially Honor Sheppard's, are rendered in a robust and lyrical fashion; the concluding tragic arias and choruses are epic and moving.

But those cackling witches might have entertained audiences back in the 'sixties. Now they're just annoying and a little tacky.

Purcell fans might compare this favorably with the iconic Geraint Jones recordings made at The Mermaid back in the 'forties.
