Music Review: excellent

Henry Mancini is one of those I always meant to get more into--his music has that undefinable "thing" that most music people detect. I always liked his sound and now that I am have made Henry the latest special guest in my home, I understand why.
Henry really understands jazz, which always starts with blues. Like many great musicians of this era, he has his own take on it that makes it his unmistakeably--all the Pink Panther theme is is a hipster blues with a really cool sax hook.
But Mancini also understood great composers keep their ear to the ground. Even before rock was important, the vocal music he did on so many of his scores had that jazzy spice that lifted it above a Letterman or Burl Ives level. Its that "thing" he has that others did not.
The Return Of The Pink Panther score was later--1970s--and even here, you can easily catch Mancini hearing more modern sounds; those easy -70s grooves, not quite rock or funk but imbued with the subtext of both, are here on this album. Quite a soundtrack
