Music reviews of DreamgirlsMusic Review: Very Infectous Music! Rating: 5 Stars
Have you ever popped in a CD for the first time and listened to it entirely, and after the first listen you find that the music from the CD is stuck inside of your mind? This is what the "Dreamgirls" soundtrack has done to me and several of my friends! This is purely good music, replete with soul and sass. The Dreamgirls, Jamie Foxx, Eddie Murphy and a few others help to deliver the great music found on this album. There is a song for just about every phase of love: falling in love, being in love, regretting being in love, and falling out of love.
I would be remiss if I didn't mention all of the positive feedback Jennifer Hudson's acting and singing skills have received. This woman is a singing powerhouse, and her remarkable voice is heard repeatedly on this soundtrack. She delivers "Love You I Do" so sincerely and passionately. This song has a tremendous effect, especially to someone who is in love. The lyrics are truly sweet and the production is also worth mentioning, the drumming arrangement in particular. Jennifer leads the Dreamgirls in their song "Dreamgirls (Finale)", and also does a great job, but this time, she reserves herself vocally. However, she gives her listener all that she has on "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going". There aren't many songs that are sung like this! She took her voice to the maximum capacity, and didn't strain once, now that's talent!
Jamie Foxx has a few songs as well. "When I First Saw You" has two versions: one with Beyonce', and one without her. "When I First Saw You" is a nice ballad. The song is about love at first sight. He also has a collaboration with Eddie Murphy entitled "Steppin' to the Bad Side", which is the CD's only lackluster song. The song is out of place, the production is mediocre at best, and the lyrics are repetitive and uncanny. The best part about the song is that two comedian extraordinaires are singing it.
Eddie Murphy's songs are just like he is: humorous. The fashion that he sings his songs seem as though they were intended to make its listener laugh. Take "I Want You" and "Fake Your Way to the Top" as examples. His voice, his adlibs, his harmonies are just funny, but at the same time, he delivers a nice vocal performances! Perhaps the best example of him being amusing on a song is "I Meant You No Harm/Jimmy's Rap". The song actually starts out with a good vocal performance from Eddie, but by songs end, he has totally cracked his listener up!
Last, but never least (NEVER) is Miss Beyonce'. What can we say about this R&B queen? Well, Beyonce's usually completely overuses her voice, but on this album, she has really good control over her songs, something I have never seen her do, but something I was very happy to see her do. "One Night Only (Disco)" is an album highlight. I enjoyed every aspect of this song. It's definitely something you can dance to. "Hard to Say Goodbye" is a really nice song. It is very heartfelt, especially after you have seen the movie and you know all of the struggles the Dreamgirls faced as a unit. Beyonce' shined on each of her contributions, but "Listen" is where she was most vibrant. This song never fails to touch me. This is probably her best song when it comes to controlling her sound.
I highly recommend this album to everyone! Everyone should find something they like on this musical treasure. 5 stars...all the way.

Description of DreamgirlsAll products are BRAND NEW and factory sealed. Fast shipping and 100% Satisfaction Guaranteed. The big question about this soundtrack is: how's she doing? No, not Beyoncé, silly--how's Jennifer Hudson doing? And more specifically, how's she doing by "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going"? To this reviewer's ears, she doesn't top the original Effie, Jennifer Holliday--or even Lillias White, from the 2001 Dreamgirls in Concert. On the other hand, Hudson isn't afraid to pullout all the stops, whipping herself up into a total diva frenzy as the song getscaught up in an unstoppable crescendo. As for Beyoncé, she adapts superbly to the 1960s- and 1970s?tinged material, though "Listen"--a ballad that also appears on her own B'day album--lacks the spirit that infuses the classic tunes on this album. For make no mistake: this is hard-hitting, high-octane music, infused with an urgency and passion that makes most contemporary R&B albums sound timid. When Hudson and Beyoncé duke it out on "It's All Over," or when the "One Night Only" ballad gets reinvented as the dance-floor burner "One Night Only (Disco)," the sheer energy flowing from the speakers is transporting. Note that the two-CD Deluxe Edition features a larger booklet and additional tracks, including dance remixes of "One Night Only" and "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going," as well as composer Henry Krieger's demo of "Patience." --Elisabeth Vincentelli More from the Dreamgirls Cast B'day, Beyoncé | American Idol season 3: Greatest Soul Classics, (Featuring a track from Jennifer Hudson) | Unpredictable, Jamie Foxx |
