Music Review: Great idea, great music, great performances, but...

By most accounts, Side Show was brilliantly staged and performed by its cast and did not deserve to close on Broadway after only 96 performances. You get a sense of that on the original cast recording but... something is missing. It's an interesting idea (Based on a true story of Siamese twins struggling to find social acceptance and romantic fulfillment), but it doesn't seem to be particulaly well-executed. Bill Russell's lyrics and book raise interesting questions but don't deal with them in a particularly satisfying way. The characters are two-dimensional and not particularly interesting, and the whole thing just doesn't work. What makes it above-average and worthy of attention is the incredible score by Henry Kreiger and the wonderful performances. Kriger's astonishingly versatile music ranges from the rock/pop style to vaudeville pastiches and is beautifully written and performed by an exceptional cast. Emily Skinner and Alice Ripley have won well-deserved praise for their performances as the twins, and even though they can't raise above the stereotypical characterizations (Ripley's Violet is the sweet, shy one who wants a husband and home, SKinner's Daisy is the mroe ambitious one who wants fame and fortune), their lovely harmonies, duets and soloes are a joy to hear. The supporting cast is also filled with excellent voices, especially Norm Lewis (Who literally stops the show with "The Devil You Know" and "You Should Be Loved") and Jeff McCarthy in one of the more dramatic numbers, "Private Conversation." But in spite of all this, what so many have hailed as great, incredible, amazing, etc. comes off as just ok on this recording. The composer and performers put their heart and soul into the material, but it doesn't come off as material worth caring that much about.
