Music Review: one song makes this album incredible

and that one song would be the 15 minute "Living in the Heart of the Beast".
Talk about INCREDIBLE! That song is mind-blowing to me on several unexplainable levels. The female lead singer almost sounds like a witch when she sings, and her lyrics... my goodness. Who in the WORLD wrote those lyrics?
And the thing that amazes me the most- the way she takes her amazing vocal range and constantly jumps around over the course of several different vocal melodies for nearly 15 minutes, ALL of the vocal melodies on the same level of brilliance.
"Living in the Heart of the Beast" is the strangest, craziest, most brilliant song I've ever heard. I feel extremely confident about this too.
It's like, you already have a winning epic track because you have a female lead singer who's entirely creepy and sings like she's going to cast a spell on you at any moment just by listening to her range alone (not to mention she tends to shift the mood of the song into something dangerous and haunting, like someone trying to bring a dead spirit back to life- seriously, an amazingly creepy voice she was gifted with).
Then the music that's playing directly behind the female singer is EXTREMELY bizarre and quite similar to a mid 70's King Crimson or Gentle Giant album. But there's something about this epic track that's just entirely mysterious, adventurous, EVIL...and reminds me of... *something* I can't explain. It's a 15 minute ride that's great to experience time and time again.
I admit, it took me almost two hours of listening to this 15 minute track over and over until I eventually got into SOME of it (trust me, the lead singers voice will rub you the wrong way until you get used to it. It's at THIS point you'll learn to adjust and really fall in love with that wicked and bizarre vocal range of the female singer).
Around the 9 minute mark the song turns instrumental for a short period, and this is the part that reminds me of something I can't explain. It either reminds me of my confusing childhood that went by in a flash, or reminds me of the people that were in my life when I was younger that I haven't seen in years and a haunting, lingering feeling wondering what ever happened to them. This particular part of the song even puts creepy images in my head imagining what's it like when we grow older (and these are NOT fun and happy images either- this song triggers negative feelings to the extreme about an eventual sad outcome... maybe not for me, but for someone).
That little instrumental bit around the 9 minute mark seriously makes me almost too depressed to even listen to it, but I'm so utterly fascinated with the atmosphere and the bizarre choice of instruments appearing at all the right (wrong) moments... oh MAN, I don't know what to think anymore.
And what ARE those instruments? I believe I hear keyboards, drums, and synthesizers dominate most of it.
I think I know why this song strikes me on such a personal level- it reminds me of when I was about 5 years old, and didn't quite understand the purpose of going to church and what God meant, and getting confused constantly thinking about what life and death means. The bizarre way this song is put together brings back those memories. I THINK that's why I find this track so fascinating.
The rest of the album falls way way short of this epic track, but I recommend picking up In Praise of Learning for "Living In the Heart of the Beast" alone. Get ready to experience something totally shocking.
