Music Review: Wonderful solo performances of music of questionable merit

I cannot help but being of two minds regarding this release. To take the positive first, Misha Keylin is a first-rate soloist; the solo playing is full of flair and brilliance and the virtuoso elements of the music are dispatched with utmost clarity and a singing, opulent and full-blooded tone. The phrasing is often gorgeous and the playing is absolutely sure-handed. The third concerto is especially fine, and in particular the slow movement - this is absolutely outstanding violin playing and I cannot imagine any more high-profiled performer doing a better job of it. The Janacek PO under Dennis Burkh provides sympathetic accompaniment, sometimes a little reticent (the orchestral parts definitely takes second seat to the soloist, and in these performances perhaps even more so than Vieuxtemps intended).
The drawback is that the music itself is of questionable quality. Both concertos are meandering, overlong and short on really memorable ideas (the exception is again the slow movement of the third concerto). In other words this release is recommended for those looking for superb violin playing rather than for any notable musical rewards. Still, given the modest outlay I suppose this disc warrants a recommendation. The sound quality is nothing to write home about, but doesn't really get in the way of one's enjoyment.
