Music Review: Groves is an American gem
Rating: 5 Stars
Paul Groves is one of the great lyric tenors singing
today and this CD is part of the proof. His phrasing is impeccable and his voice is both sweet and compelling. Groves is a French repertoire
specialist and you can't find a finer recital than this. The song
Soupir is lovely. I love this album and I wish Groves would record more.
I notice that Rolando Villazon has this recording on his list of 10 discs to own/listen to.
Description of Duparc: Chansons
In a relatively short career as a composer, curtailed by illness, Henri Duparc left a small group of songs that have since proved a major part of French song repertoire. The songs for tenor and piano recorded on this disc are notable for their poetic atmosphere, emotional intensity and exquisite technique. Highlights include L?invitation au voyage, set to words by Baudelaire and perhaps Duparc?s best known song, the deeply felt Elégie, the dramatic Le manoir de Rosemonde, with its haunted search, and the harmonically adventurous Chanson triste.Classical CDs
