Music Review: This is the very best "HELP!" CD ever released!

After 45 years, the album "HELP!" by The Beatles remains a brilliant piece of music-making. First recorded and released in 1965, this was the soundtrack to their second motion picture of the same name. This Russian-imported CD features both the British and American albums together on one disc. As was the norm for the mid-60s, Parlophone in England released the album with the 7 film songs on side one and additional bonus selections on side two; the same had been done for their first soundtrack album "A Hard Day's Night" in 1964. Capitol in America released their version of the album containing the songs from The Beatles, mixed in with instrumental score from the film. The same format was also utilised for the 1964 soundtrack of "A Hard Day's Night", on the United Artists label.
What makes this CD so extraordinary is that it combines both versions of the "HELP!" album together, in their entirety and in the same running order, along with 10 bonus tracks - 9 alternate takes of the song "Help!" and a different mix of "Ticket To Ride" with no fade-out at the end of the song. The alternate takes (1 through 9) of the song "Help!" gives the listener a rare and unique experience to hear exactly how the band put the song together with just the basic instrumental backing, which would later be augmented by the vocals. At a total running time of just over 78 minutes, this CD presents "HELP!" in its most definitive format. It also includes the unique James Bond-style intro at the start of the song "Help!" on the American version.

For many American Beatles fans who grew up in the initial wave of 'Beatlemania' during the mid-60s, it is the Capitol album that they remember best. For the younger fans who grew up in the mid-80s onward, they became accustomed to the Parlophone version when it was released on CD for the first time. Now, Beatles fans of all ages can enjoy the most complete "HELP!" CD ever issued. For those people seeking out this CD, it is definitely worth the effort to find it. As an extra added bonus, this CD also includes reproductions of both the British and American albums covers of the front of the CD insert, shown in full color. The reverse shows the back cover to the British album. When the insert is unfolded, both the interior gatefold and back cover of the American album are also reproduced. The CD jewel case tray insert shows the front cover of the "HELP!" album that was originally released in Germany in 1965 on the Hor-Zu label. Song titles appearing on the CD are listed on the reverse side of the insert.
Altogether, this CD represents a remarkable moment in musical history, released at a time when The Beatles were dominating the music scene. It might seem a bit unusual to find a Beatles CD that has several of the songs repeated, but in the context of this album, it is truly worth it.
