Music Review: Bringing Back the Old School!

San Diego's HELLFIRE TRIGGER are a part of the New Age Records resurgence, and this band's blend of classic, California styled early 80s punk/hardcore is bound to turn some heads.

I'm pretty startled by how well Sent Down To Burn blends the sounds of old with the modern production traits of today (though For The Record studio, where this was recorded, is known for having that awesome capability). Basically, HELLFIRE TRIGGER play intelligent ultra-fast punk rock with an impressive degree of technical skill. Strong bass work (particularly on "Zombies") and roaring guitars keep the aggression on high, while the melodic vocals manage to whip everything into form. Most of the songs have a dark, TSOL vibe going on, while the remaining reach out with positive energy and rockin' sing-alongs. "Keep It Alive," the ninth track is the band's most ambitious number as it takes on a rhythmic attack that reminds me of the great New York skatecore band TOKEN ENTRY.

Sent Down To Burn completes its aesthetic with dramatic, illustrated cover art (featuring the staples of yore - references to violence, religion and money), and black and white live photos of the group in action. Throwbacks like this don't come around too often (at least at this level of competency), so if you've ever tried to make a connection with groups like the ADOLESCENTS or the aforementioned TSOL, but it never clicked because they were already remnants of the past, then HELLFIRE TRIGGER should help fill that void.

Many hardcore bands today have turned their backs on hard core's punk roots and have gone for a more metal sound. Not Hellfire Trigger. True to hardcore's roots Hell Fire Trigger have a hardcore punk sound reminiscent of the Misfits and Blackflag. Rock-n-Roll guitars, riffs that groove, and solid drumming come together in "Sent Down to Burn" creating a sound which is dirty and real. Hellfire Trigger are the real deal, not only to they promote the scene they are the scene running venues, booking shows, and running their own label. Check them out you won't be disappointed.
