Music Review: Villa-Lobos: Complete Music for Solo Guitar COMPLETELY MISINTERPRETED!!!

Villa Lobos would turn in his grave upon hearing this extremely careless interpretation of his excellent music. NAXOS really didn't do a great job with this CD. Normally I am incredibly pleased with what this label puts out but this recording is a glaring disappointment.
Norbert Kraft's interpretation of Villa-Lobos's guitar music is incredibly flawed. I took a look a very legitamate, well studied copy of the sheet music of every last piece on this recording and was incredibly disappointed with how defiant Kraft's interpretation is to what Villa-Lobos wrote. Kraft show's very little respect for meter and tempo. In Etude #7, the scale passages are rushed to the point where they are absolutely unintelligable. The opening section of the first Prelude is played Moderato as opposed to "Andantino expressivo" like Villa-Lobos wrote for it to be played. The middle section of that Prelude is schiztophrenic in respect to the tempo. He goes from Presto to Largo in the span of two measures. Also, Kraft plays a section in Prelude #1 marked "Poco Meno" (calling for the musician to back of a little) and puts a lot MORE motion into the music. The Animato section in Prelude #4 is extremely rushed to the point where the listener loses the dramatic effect of the section. Kraft's utter disregard for the tempo in many areas of the music results in a sacrifice of musicality for inflaming his technical virtuosity.
In short, Kraft takes way too much liberty with the music. Villa-Lobos is a composer who writes very specifically. EVERY piece has indications in it of places where Villa-Lobos wants the musician to take more time. Kraft observes most of these indications (though, not necessarily at the exact moment they are written), but does not limit himself to the composer's carfully chosen Rubato sections. When a composer writes with such specificity that Villa-Lobos writes with, challenging the composer's writing is often frowned upon.
The music tends to lack emotion as well. The fast pieces lack the animated spirit and the slow ones show no observance of musical expression. These unfortunate results probably stem from Kraft's "Look what I can do!" approach to the music. For instance the Gavotta in the Suite Populaire Bresilienne and Prelude #3 are both intended to be a musical nod to Baroque composer J.S. Bach. This is because Prelude #3 was originally subtitled "Hommage to Bach" and Villa-Lobos's Bachiannas Bresiliennes for orchestra also indicate a strong influence of Bach (hence the name "Bach"iannas). A Gavotte is actually a form of Baroque dance that Bach often wrote in. For these reasons the Gavotta and 3rd Prelude should take a look back at the Baroque while still staying in the Post-Modern style that Villa-Lobos was renowned for writing in. Kraft has no regard for this stylistic reference and plays the pieces in a manner in which there is no regard for Bach.
However, there are a few small pluses to this recording. First of all, it is probably the only recording to have the entirety of Villa-Lobos's Solo Guitar repertoire on it. The music itself is great though poorly interpreted. Also, for a small price of $7, its worth having for referential purposes. If this album were much more than $10 or $12 dollars, it would probably not be worth your money. CLASSICAL GUITARISTS BEWARE: This Is NOT How The Music Of Villa-Lobos Should Sound!!! Knowing this makes the album worth your money as long as you are not expecting to hear an amazing performance. Remember: The musician should play "What the music says to them." Norbert Kraft takes the opposite approach: "This is what I say to the music." Sorry Mr. Kraft, you didn't write it!
