Music Review: Bream in His Prime Does Spanish Guitar--Beautifully!

First let me make clear I'm reviewing the 1997 remastered CD of this 1962 recording, originally released on LP. Though this version has been superseded, it still can be found occasionally. I haven't heard the 2006 release nor the SACD verson, but I doubt they can improve on it to any great extent.
The playing is, as all seem to agree, excellent. The sound, contrary to the opinion of one reviewer, is very lovely: the guitar sings with a voice so sweet we can understand Chopin's remark that he could think of no sound more lovely than that of a guitar, except possibly that of two. (This from a composer dedicated to the piano!) The acoustics of the recording locale (the Library at Kenwood House, London) seem near-ideal for the recital, and the recording engineers do a fine job of capturing the sound. (There is only one small complaint one could offer here: on the few occasions when a fast run is performed in the very lowest register it tends to get a bit blurred by reverberation.) The remastering by Hsi-Ling Chang in 20-bit technology, done with great care to preserve and enhance the music while subtracting nothing from it, seems on the evidence to have been a clear success.
The selections are well-chosen and varied in style and mood. The English Bream seems to take naturally to the ethnicity of the Spanish pieces, performing as well or better than most Spanish guitarists. And he seems to have an even greater interpretive flair for the 3 Brazilian pieces of Villa-Lobos.
In sum, this is a very fine (though short, at 42+ minutes!) recording of some excellent Spanish and Brazilian pieces which showcases the brilliance of Julian Bream in his early maturity. The playing is virtuosic while remaining clean and precise. It is well worth having in at least one of its versions, and will certainly be cherished for years.
