Music Review: Innovative industrial fusion

Not exactly the "Dead Can Dance [of] the 21st century" that the product description provided here touts, but Heimataerde (Homeground) definitely provides a unique fusion of music influences that display the clash of Western European and Middle Eastern cultures during the Crusades. The industrial dance music genre, which constantly needs an infusion of innovation to keep it going, benefits from this German solo project by DJ Ash (in collaboration with other artists), with this collection bringing together songs that were originally released separately as two singles, "Unter der Linden" (2006) and "Vater" (2008), a portion of which reappeared in later albums such as "Kadavergehorsam" (2006) and "Leben Geben Leben Nehmen" (2007). The original CD singles are currently going for $20 to $35 each, so this re-release combining these two singles provides the chance for neophytes to get familiar with Heimataerde, at least for purists who would rather not go the MP3 route. It is easy to confuse "Unter der Linden" with "Unter den Linden", because the latter is a famous boulevard in Berlin, Germany that was named for its linden trees, and the former is a poem by Walther von der Vogelweide, the most celebrated of the Middle High German lyric poets, and Anna-Maria Straatmann of "Massiv in Mensch" lent her beautiful voice to the industrial rendition of the poem. The first mix (the "Club" version) of this song that opens the single by the same name is the harder of the two, but it is the extended second mix (the "Saltatio Mixtura" version) of "Vater" that is the standout on this CD, and the marriage of this song with the closing "Mutter" track beckons the music lover for the repeated listening so often sought in works of this genre that in this case is actually found. The Heimataerde website quotes 1 Corinthians 13:1, "If I speak in the tongues of men and angles, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing." Well said.
