This CD brought back fond memories. I was a subscriber to the N.J. Symphony during Macal's tenure as music director, and the sound of the orchestra as recorded here is the way I remember the orchestra sounding at its best. Macal is a superb orchestra trainer. It may come as a surprise to hear me say this, but this is one of the best played Symphonies Fantastique that I've ever heard. The string playing is beautifully cultivated, with loving attention to detail in every bar. The orchestra under Macal was unsurpassed in Mozart and Haydn, and you can hear the same dedicated ensemble in this performance. The brass are full and gorgeously balanced, while the winds, if not always distinctive, offer lovely intonation. Indeed, you rarely will hear an orchestra play so beautifully in tune. This may not be the most exciting, unbuttoned Berlioz in the world, but there is much to be said for the lucidity of Macal's approach. Now that the NJSO is in financial peril, it is good to have this memento of them in their prime.
