Music Review: HARRY: COME BACK TO US!

Well, when this album was first released, I said, "Great! Harry's going back to the big band sound!" When I saw the list of songs, it was better yet. The first one is the famous Bobby Darin hit, "More". I expected Connick to go toe to toe with Bobby, throwing in some piano licks with his own style. Eagerly, I slid the CD into the player and I heard:

M O O O R R R R E E E.....

It sounded like someone had turned the speed down on an old record player. The song was dull, overwhelmed with Percy Faith style violins, and all in the same deadly tempo. Harry's voice sounded like he was reading a suicide note. Not a good place to start, but I figured the pace would pick up.

Eleven songs later, I realized, this is Harry on Prozac. This is a Ferrari at 55 MPH. This is the music that will be playing at every early-bird special at every Denny's in the nation. This, is unlistenable. To add insult to injury, just think about how great those fifties classics like "Save the Last Dance for Me", or "Only You" would have been if Harry had just SWUNG them. Now imagine those songs sung by Harry hung over, with a cold, under water, wrapped in a burlap bag. THAT'S how bad they are. Not once does he change tempo. Not once does he try for even a little crescendo. And on only one song, can you even tell that it's Harry Connick playing the piano.

Where is the synchopated, toe-tappin, swingin' New Orleans style? Nowhere. Where are the burning piano solos? Lost in a sea of delicate Ferrante and Teischer tinkling. Where is the voice? Where is the voice? This isn't music, this is a cough drop!

Harry: I see that you arranged this stuff on your own, so there's no one else to blame. I don't know WHAT you were thinking, but it just isn't working. Let's pretend this never happened. Let's pretend that someone put a gun to your head, took your musical instincts hostage, and made you record this deadly disc. Harry: You know how to swing like nobody else. All is forgiven. Please come out and play.
