Music Review: Easily his best

It's a shame these days when you hit the record shops that if you can even find Harry Belafonte's CD's, they are generally just a mix of his various "greatest hits" collections. Obviously Harry is well known for his contributions to Calypso music, with hits like Day-O, Island In The Sun and Jamaica Farewell. But My Lord What A Mornin' is nothing like those songs.
I bought the Essential Harry Belafonte CD and came across the title track while playing it in the background at work. I had to literally stop what I was doing, the song was so beautiful. The music is so simple but it evokes so much emotion. The lyrics are about death, yet the song is incredibly uplifting.
The songs on the CD are all spiritual, it's a very Christian album. However if you love music at all, especially emotional well sung music, then you will love this CD regardless of your faith. There's no steel drums or maracas on this CD like many of his other albums, in fact the whole album is completely a cappella. The last song on the track, fast becoming my favourite, entitled "Steal Away", features Harry's voice completely solo, which is obviously an extremely rare and hard to find treat for his fans.
I would recommend this album to his fans that have enjoyed the quiter albums, like his Christmas album or "In My Quiet Room". You may not get much out of this album if you only enjoy his calypso tunes. But this CD is very much like a follow up Christmas CD, it has that feel to it. In fact judging by the sound of the album I can only assume they were recorded around the same time.
Best tracks on the CD; My Lord What A Mornin', Buked and Scorned, Swing Low and Steal Away. If you are familiar with the Alvin Ailey Dance Company then you will likely already know Buked and Scorned and everyone in the world knows Swing Low, Sweet Chariot, but this version is very quiet, very emotional and likely the greatest version of this song I've ever heard.
If you're a fan of Harry's, get this one before they stop printing it. And if you like this, go one step further and pick up the box set Long Road To Freedom - The History of Black Music, as well.
Note that the CD lists bonus tracks on this album but my copy did not come with anything beyond track 11.
