You think they're fierce?

None of them can touch the One & Only MADONNA.

In the year two thousand and eight Madonna is arguably the Most Celebrated and Recognized Person in the World. How exactly did this little Mid-Western Girl become The Most Influential Popular Culture Figure, almost over night...?

Madonna Louise Ciccone was born in Bay City, Michigan at Bay City's Mercy Hospital on August 16, 1958 to Silvio and Madonna Ciccone (n?e Fortin.) Madonna's first few years were very harmonious and joyful. Madonna's mom was very religious and even made little Madonna go to church every single day, like a good Catholic girl! At he age of 5 Madonna's entire world changed, forever when her mother succumbed to cancer in 1963.

Madonna was the oldest girl, of 8 children and was often expected to watch her younger brothers and sisters. A few years after her mother's tragic death, Madonna's father remarried Joan Gustafson. Over the years, Madonna learned to accept her stepmother, but as a teenager Madonna resented Joan very much because she felt that she was stealing her dad away. Both Madonna's father and stepmother were very tough on her, but looking back Madonna didn't mind, "I wouldn't have turned out the way I was if I didn't have all those old-fashioned values to rebel against."

Madonna graduated from Rochester Adams High School in 1975 with honors. As a matter of fact, Madonna was such an intelligent student that she earned a scholarship to the University of Michigan, as a dancer. After only a couple of years Madonna left college for the bright lights of the Big Apple because she felt that college was just too institutional for her needs. She also left because Madonna always felt like an outsider and could never fit in. And as Madonna explained "better to live one year as a tiger, than a hundred as a sheep."

In 1977 Madonna arrived in New York supposedly with her favorite dolly and only $35.00 to her name! "It was the bravest thing I'd ever done," Madonna once said about her first trip to New York. After being instructed to "drop me off in the middle of everything," her cabbie left this shy and somewhat awkward brunette in Times Square. Over the next few months Madonna traveled back and forth from New York to her father's home in Rochester, Michigan; finally deciding that New York was going to be her new home; ...come what may.

By the early eighties Madonna realized that she was never going to make it as a dancer and decided to re-invent herself as a singer. She even formed a band and toured New York's seedy Lower East Side in the hopes of being discovered. With her new demo in hand Madonna convinced a DJ friend of hers to play her new song in late 1981.

The song was "Everybody" and it caught the attention of the fatcats at Warner Bros.' Sire Records. But Madonna could not understand why things weren't moving quickly enough. She wanted to be a star and felt like they were stalling. So, she took it upon herself to visit Sire Records honcho Seymour Stein who was laid up in the hospital. "If I were lying in a coffin, she would have waved the papers in front of me," Seymour Stein said about the girl he discovered. By April 1982 Madonna struck a deal with Sire and was signed on. Later that year, Madonna filmed her first music video for "Everybody" which was shown throughout clubs in New York. In her video, Madonna can be seen dancing with her brother and another good friend.

Over the next year, multiple singles were released promotionally in New York and London. Some of these songs are some of Madonna's most-loved dance tunes, such as "Burning Up," "Physical Attraction," and "Holiday." And on July 27, 1983 Madonna's long-awaited debut LP was released; aptly titled "Madonna." Madonna's record was almost an immediate success both here and abroad because everyone loved her fun and carefree lyrics!

In January 1984 Madonna appeared on American Bandstand and told Dlck Clark "I want to rule the world." Sire released both "Borderline" and "Lucky Star" causing a huge buzz. Madonna's videos for both songs also created a lot of acclaim. Sire Records knew that they had to act quickly because there was such an interest in Madonna; so they sped up the release of her second record. Upon the release of Madonna's second album, "Like a Vlrgin" on November 12, 1984 Madonna became a huge, worldwide sensation. "Like a Vlrgin" became Madonna's first Number One single and Madonna d?buted the song on MTV's first music awards, wearing a lovely wedding dress. What else?

Many parents groups felt that the lyrics were too racy and were appalled by Madonna's s*xu*lized persona. But what really made them crazy was the way Madonna looked. With her oversized "boytoy" belt and giant hoop-earning and barely-there tops she was anything but the girl next door. In 1985 New York's flagship Bamburger's opened an entire Madonna department. They sold the exact same types of skirts and high-heels and everything else a girl needed to dress like Madonna. It was also around this time that the word WANNABE was born!

Madonna's second single off of "Like A Vlrgin" is one of her most identifiable, "Material Girl." This was supposed to be about excess but Madonna claimed that no one got it. While shooting the video for "Material Girl" Madonna met "the coolest guy in the universe" Sean Penn. Six months later they were married! Later that year Madonna went on tour in the Spring of '85; The Vlrgin Tour. Madonna also appeared in her first movie, "Vision Quest." The movie is forgettable, but it does include 2 of Madonna's songs, "Gambler" and her first Number One ballad "Crazy For You."

Madonna's second movie "Desperately Seeking Susan" was a hit with both fans and critics. Everyone loved the movie, except perhaps Madonna's costar, Rosanna Arquette who complained to everyone that would listen about "the Madonna movie." "Desperately Seeking Susan" was a sleeper which caused the entire country to ask in droves: Where's Susan? Madonna also scored her next hit, "Into the Groove" which was the theme song for the movie. Since "Like A Vlrgin" was pushed up so quickly, it was not included on the long play, so Sire simply included it on the B-side of "Angle." This is Madonna's only hit that was never released as a single and never even put on an album!

In July 1985 a newly redheaded Madonna performed 3 songs in Philadelphia at Live Aid, "Holiday," "Into the Groove," and a new song "Love Makes the World Go Round." During this time Madonna also experienced an entirely new controversy. This time both P enthouse and P layboy were publishing competing issues which included pics of a very young and unclothed Madonna! But Madonna wasn't ashamed and even made light of it during her performance at Live Aid. "I am my own experiment. I am my own work of art," Madonna said a few years later when asked about these sensational photos. Also in 1985 Stephen Jon Lewicki, a b-movie producer who directed Madonna in the throwaway "A Certain Sacrifice" got his film distributed. Madonna tried to stop its release but was unsuccessful since she signed away all rights in 1979 before the film was first made.

Almost immediately after beginning to shoot her third motion picture, with new hubby Sean, there was trouble in paradise on the set of "Shanghai Surprise." By this time Sean also developed a reputation for being very media shy which was in contrast to the bubbly and outgoing Madonna. At a rare press conference to dispel rumors of dissention Madonna said in late '85 that everything "was great." "Shanghai Surprise" was released in August 1986 and has gone down in history as one of the worst movies ever produced. Madonna received some of the worst reviews of her entire career; but wasn't going to pack things in just yet because she was a fighter!

On April 18, 1986 Leeza Gibbons asked Ally Sheedy if in fact Sean and Madonna were attending his world premiere for "At Close Range." The "St. Elmo's Fire" Star said, "maybe if he thinks he has something important to say." Mr. and Mrs. Penn did show up. No one recognized Madonna though. Gone were the junk jewelry and sexy boytoy outfits. The "new Madonna" was seen in a beautiful, flowing ankle length monochromatic dress. Her makeup was soft and almost unnoticeable. Her hair was very short and very blonde and very sexy and had that just "got out of the shower look." When Leeza finally caught up with the Penns at the premiere she immediately asked Madonna, "how was it working with Sean on this movie?" Mrs. Penn demurely said, "We didn't work together on this movie." As they were walking into the theater Leeza asked Sean, "you have said you want to make big, box office movies, will this be one?" Sean coyly said, "Only time will tell," as he held his lady and they both went in.

Madonna also had her first '86 hit, with "Live to Tell" in the Winter of '86. Over the years this song has become a fan favorite because Madonna's voice is so beautiful and her lyrics are so powerful. Madonna's next single was one of her most scandalous yet. Always the busiest bee there is, around this time, Madonna appeared in Lincoln Center in "The Goose and Tom Tom," a theater production written by David Rabe. Madonna played the "gum chewing gun moll" Lorraine.

"Papa Don't Preach" was an instant Number One Hit when it was released in June of '86 and caused another huge controversy. Critics claimed that Madonna promoted teen pregnancy. And Women's groups claimed that Madonna was not promoting freedom of choice, so no matter what she did they were all against her! In fact, the song was about a young girl who became pregnant and decided to keep her baby. The message in both the song and the hit video is very clear; Madonna was exercising her right to choose. Never one to shy away from matters of the heart Madonna has said, "I'd like to be more involved in making the world a better place."

Madonna's third studio long play was released by Sire on June 30, 1986 and became a Number One record all over the world! It was certified platinum only 8 weeks later! That summer Madonna released her third single which was the title track, "True Blue." US fans were treated to a homemade music video of a couple getting married. This was the winning video from a contest that MTV sponsored and when Madonna presented the winners of the video contest, ?ngel Gracia and Cliff Guest with a check she asked them if they could direct her next video.

They didn't direct Madonna's next video, though. Madonna set her sights a little higher when she had famed fashion photographer Jean-Baptiste Mondino direct "Open Your Heart." This was Madonna's final '86 hit, which was not without more hysteria. Many groups were outraged by the subliminal h*ms*xual images. But most were even more appalled by the images of a child entering a strip club and then kissing Madonna at the end. Madonna explained it away saying "it was innocence."

In September 1986 Madonna appeared on the cover of the British fashion magazine, Tatler which overtime has become one of Madonna's most cherished pictures and magazines among fans. She is all made up with a white turban and has a silver crucifix dangling over her forehead. At the end of the year, the same exotic picture of Madonna was used again for another magazine cover in Japan.

In the Winter of '87 a newly brunette Madonna released her final music video from the "True Blue" LP, "La Isla Bonita." Over time this song has become one of her most danceable hits and one of her songs that she's most likely to perform because Madonna always loved this track. "La Isla Bonita" also marked another pivotal time in Madonna's career. This marks the first time that Madonna has a cross-over hit in Spanish/English and the first time Madonna received a Number One song in France!

Can you say: Quien es esa ni?a...? Madonna's next single was her first Number One US hit of '87, "Who's That Girl." Madonna kept with the Spanish theme on this song, too! "Who's That Girl" was also the title to Madonna's next feature film and accompanying World Tour and soundtrack album. The single and the tour and the album were all hugely successful. In fact, Madonna performed all over the world to sold-out arenas. This was the first time she ever toured around the world and fans ran out as fast as they could to see her! "I was in Italy at the time of your tour and never in my life have I seen such a thing," David Letterman said to Madonna, "the entire city just closed down for you." Madonna responded arrogantly "as they should do."

Madonna's movie by the same title was no where near the success of her record and tour. Originally titled "Slammer," it was retitled when Warners didn't want to shed light on Sean's arrests. In this silly farce, Madonna played Nikki Finn, an ex-con from New York with white hair and good left hook! Madonna has since said, "that was a bad movie that I was bad in." Looking back, she's most unhappy with both her music and film during the WTG era. Even though fans consider these to be some of her greatest songs, Madonna has refused to ever sing another song from the "Who's That Girl" CD! She even fought Warner Bros. tooth and nail when they tried to include it on "The Immaculate Collection!" (Madonna finally relented and allowed WEA to include some of the WTG songs on the European special edition, "The Holiday Collection.")

Just in time for Christmas 1987, Madonna released her first compilation CD and the first long play album made up entirely of remixes! "You Can Dance" was Madonna's fifth album to go platinum! This also opened the flood gates for pop artists and dance singers to release their own remix CDs because before Madonna this was something that was never done! This is also the first and only time in Madonna's entire career that she released an album that had different tracks on both cassette and CD, because Madonna wanted her fans to get the most bang for their buck!

Madonna shot an AIDS-awareness PSA in '88; set in a New York high school. Also, in that same year Madonna stared in her only Broadway production, "Speed the Plow" at the Royale Theater. On July 1, 1988 Madonna appeared on David Letterman and hinted that she was tired of performing day in and day out on Broadway. "It feels like forever," Madonna answered when Dave asked her how much longer would she be on Broadway. Also during this interview, Madonna brought out her fast talking gal pal, Sandy Bernhard. Both girls were dressed in the exact same outfit (a white t-shirt, denim jean shorts and black shoes) and both girls were more than happy to make everyone's tongue wag at the possibility of a secret love affair.

But Madonna wasn't digging Sandy, she was in love with Sean. And that's why it's all the more sadder that their marriage fell apart in 1988. New York's local news show "A Current Affair" even reported that Madonna spent New Years Eve 1988 "trussed up like a turkey" because her "bully-boy hubby wouldn't let her leave the house." When asked for a comment Madonna's longtime publicist Liz Rosenberg said "that's the stupidest thing I ever heard. I can't believe you people would report such a ridiculous story that even people in England don't believe." Madonna filed for divorce in January 1989.

In early 1989 it was announced that Madonna would market Pepsi and Vice versa. This was also the first time in world history that a commercial received a commercial! There was a "teaser" which included a brief clip of Madonna's "eyes" in a desert-setting, advertising her commercial! The full Pepsi commercial premiered on March 2, 1989 during the Number One coast-to-coast American show, "The Cosby Show." This was a lighthearted clip of Madonna looking back at home videos of a young girl; at the very end of the commercial Madonna simply said "go ahead, make a wish."

The following day Madonna's "Like A Prayer" premiered on MTV and immediately caused a huge worldwide pandemic. Before the video even finished broadcasting, MTV was bombarded with thousands of angry phone calls from parents all over the country! Here was again a new Madonna. She looked like a sixties flower child, with 4 rings on each finger, her hair long and dark and a sexy slip-dress. In this video Madonna danced in a church after witnessing the violent r*pe of a young lady by a couple of white men. A black man was arrested who looked a lot like Madonna's "black Jesus" or Saint Martin de Porres. Madonna even dances in front of a few burning crosses and kisses her black Jesus on the altar. "I think it was just bigotry in disguise," Mary Lambert, the director said in response to all of the hysteria over the video.

"No sewer is too deep for her" was the front page headline of a British newspaper which seemed to echo what many people were already thinking about this "condemned woman." Madonna's "Like a Prayer" video was banned in several countries around the world including Italy. And many Christian Fundamentalist Groups including the Southern Baptist Convention were calling for a Pepsi boycott. Madonna was also heavily criticized for using and manipulating her black audience.

The album and single immediately went to Number One and the video was played on MTV every hour and every day throughout the Winter and Spring of '89! Like all of Madonna's records since "True Blue," "Like A Prayer" was another record that Madonna did not do a single interview for or any other performance which makes her accomplishments even that much more unprecedented. After all the bad press Pepsi decided to let Madonna out of their contract and never showed her commercial again. A year later when asked if she was still allowed to keep all the money that Pepsi advanced her Madonna said with a huge smile on her face, "yes, lucky me."

Madonna's second single and video off "Like A Prayer" was her next Number One single, "Express Yourself." In this video a now platinum-blonde Madonna can be seen chained to a bed, crawling on the floor and making love to a factory worker. Madonna was again chastised in the press, this time by women's groups for daring to allow her body to be controlled by any man. The video also marked a very important shift in the genre of pop music because this was the most expensive music video ever produced!

Madonna's next feature film "Bloodhounds of Broadway" was released in 1989 (and then shown on PBS a few months later which earned Public Television their highest ratings ever!) Even though the movie was directed by Madonna's good friend Howard Brookner and even though the premiere was a benefit for A-I-D-S causes (a disease that Howard Brookner died of,) Madonna still skipped the event and refused to participate in any promotion for this limited-release movie! She claimed that she was simply too busy. But others intimated it was probably to save herself any embarrassment from yet another horrid movie!

Madonna's next 2 singles off of "Like A Prayer" were the considerably less in-your-face "Cherish" and "Oh Father." "Cherish" was another worldwide hit for Madonna which peaked at Number 2 in the US! "Oh Father" was a very beautiful song, although it became one of Madonna's weakest singles to date. The music video is a much loved gem among fans, which created a huge stir once again when it premiered on MTV. Afraid of another Madonna scandal Warner Bros. tried to get Madonna to edit out the religious depictions and images of a dead woman in the video but Madonna told them "hell no." Madonna also released an animated video for European fans for her non-US hit "Dear Jessie."

Madonna experienced d?j? vu yet again when another corporate entity tried to sensor her. This time MTV was unhappy with her "Vogue" video because it clearly showed Madonna's chest. But Madonna refused to change her video and it premiered anyway. This was the first time a music video ever showed such images on American television! Madonna also earned her next Number One hit with "Vogue," her lead single from her next CD "I'm Breathless."

"I'm Breathless" was technically not a studio LP since the songs were either from a movie or inspired by a movie. The second and last single from the CD was "Hanky Panky" a moody jazz-dance track that didn't do much on the charts; although with its hints of S&M it was not without some scandal.

This movie of course is one of Madonna's most famous roles, Breathless Mahoney; from Warren Beatty's "Dlck Tracy." This film was much needed for Madonna, who hadn't had a hit movie since "Desperately Seeking Susan." But Madonna never gave up at anything she tried; she always had only the highest standards, once saying "I won't be happy till I'm as famous as G0d."

Madonna appeared on Arsenio Hall in the Spring of 1990 in a rare interview telling Arsenio that his "fade was tired." Later, when Arsenio asked what Madonna thought of La Toya's b00b-job Madonna facetiously said "I don't want to say anything because anytime I do I always get in trouble, but they're fake." The following day a humiliated La Toya issued a statement saying that "Madonna is not a lady and never will be."

In April 1990 Madonna kicked off her Blond Ambition Tour in Tokyo. This was Madonna's most intricate, personal and artistic endeavor ever! This was also the first time in musical history that an artist chose to not only put on a "concert" but to put on such an emotional and thought-out show like this! On this tour, Madonna did it all. She sang, she danced, she told a few jokes and she of course stirred up trouble wherever she went. On the Toronto leg of her tour Madonna was threatened with arrest for lewd behavior if she didn't change her performance to "Like A Virgin." In this number Madonna thrusted on a giant crimson bed with 2 "h ermaphrodites." But Madonna didn't change her concert. When Madonna's tour came to Italy the Vatican condemned her and the Pope urged everyone to stay away from this "wanton woman." Madonna gave a very rare public statement on Italy's state-run RAI-TV unapologetically saying that her concert "took the audience on an emotional journey."

"As the seasons change so do the Madonna controversies," Forrest Sawyer said to her on Nightline on December 3, 1990. Madonna came on to explain her latest music video, the Number One single "Justify My Love." This video depicted multiple s-e-x partners, nudity, h omos*xuality and b s*xuality; it had everything but the kitchen sink! This time MTV said that they "had enough" and would not show Madonna's video under any circumstance. Besides being shown (heavily edited) on Howard Stern's Channel 9 Show, the music video was never again shown on American TV. During Madonna's interview on Nightline, Madonna explained that "I am an artist and I cannot explain what I plan to do next because I don't know, it just hits me." Madonna, yet again made history when she convinced Warner Home Video to distribute and market "Justify My Life" as the world's first video single! The video became an instant bestseller! Madonna also released "The Immaculate Collection" which also was another Number One CD!

In early 1991 Madonna experienced an entirely new scandal when the "Justify My Love" maxi-single was released commercially. (Incidentally, the format "maxi-single" is yet another medium that Madonna both pioneered and cornered!) This time Salmon Rushdie claimed that Madonna was anti-s*mitic for releasing the "Beast Within Mix." Madonna had no intention of yet again being (mis)understood and this time simply kept her trap shut.

Madonna released her "Truth or Dare" feature film documentary in May 1991. This was the first documentary of its kind and opened the floodgates for an entirely new genre. The film was a hit and Madonna again treaded new waters. In "Truth or Dare" Madonna can be seen "throwing shade" on her brother, pitting her dancers against each other and teaching the fine out of "downing an evian bottle." But perhaps Madonna's most personal moment in her documentary was when she spoke about her ex-husband, Sean. "He was the love of my life," Madonna said. At the premiere party MTV was there filming Madonna as she held up a cover of The Post with a mean-spirited headline about her and Madonna loudly proclaimed "yes I am a tramp."

Madonna also put out 2 concert videos in promotion for "Truth or Dare" because she wanted to be sure her fans knew what they were getting into! "Holiday" included a very subdued performance and "Like a Virgin" showed Madonna's shocking romp on the bed! The following year, Julie Brown released her mockumentary on Showtime "Dare To Be Truthful." Julie claimed that, "I heard she didn't like the scene where I rolled around on my dog's grave. She'd rolled around on her mother's--like that wasn't offensive enough?"

In 1991 when many talk shows dedicated entire programs to her, Madonna gave a scarce (all be it brief) phone interview promising Geraldo that she would "do any interview you want me to do" as soon as he kissed a man. Geraldo declined but Madonna explained, "Straight men need to be emasculated. I'm sorry. They all need to be slapped around. Women have been kept down for too long. Every straight guy should have a man's tongue in his mouth at least once."

Madonna wasn't seen again until Woody Allen's film "Shadows and Fog" was released to a limited engagement on March 30, 1992. Madonna has a walk-on role as Marie, a tightrope artist. Later that year, Madonna's first staring role in a major motion picture in over 2 years was released; "A League of Their Own." In this movie, Madonna portrayed a female baseball player, Mae. Madonna looked and sounded so different; in this movie that took place, during World War II! She even sang the theme song, "This Used To Be My Playground," which was another Number One Hit! But this time critics and fans were totally shocked and stunned because no one has seen Madonna behave so demurely and innocently, ever! Has Madonna changed?

In 1992 Madonna signed an unprecedented multiple-million dollar contract with Time Warner making her the partial owner of Maverick Records. Maverick was Madonna's partially independent label that was also backed by Warner Bros. And, for the billionth time in Madonna's career she charted new oceans as the first pop star to ever own her own label and production company!

In August of 1992 both Ro and Madonna appeared on Arsenio Hall to promote "A League of Their Own." Ro told the story of how they met and became fast friends. And then she told this really touching story, "this little dark haired lady went to this drag bar and started handing out twenties to this guy who was doing her. All of a sudden he recognized that it was Madonna and started to cry." "She, not 'he,'" Madonna corrected. Arsenio then brought out a surprise guest to meet Madonna; her father. "I'm really glad that you're here but now I can't say anything," Madonna said sheepishly.

If anyone thought that Madonna turned over a new leaf, they were proven very wrong when on October 21, 1992 Warner Bros. released S E X...! S-E-X, where do I begin? This was of course, Madonna's "coffee table" book of sexual imagery that depicted all types of acts with all types of people doing everything. Madonna was the star of the show; she was in the thick of things! Truth be told, it was all just an illusion; a fantasy. "Everyone probably thinks that I'm a raving n ymphomaniac, that I have an insatiable s*xual appetite, when the truth is I'd rather read a book," Madonna has since said.

"The entire country just seems really h omophic and afraid, I think this is just what they need right now," Madonna said in anticipation of her book. Madonna's book was an instant bestseller and in fact the fastest selling non-fiction book in all of American publication history! It also marks the first time ever that a celebrity published a book of its kind and the first time ever that a celebrity of Madonna's caliber and status ever published nude photos of themself! For the books premiere party Madonna showed up dressed as Little Bow Peep. She even sent out these cute little dominatrix invitations. When a reporter asked her what she would say if a child saw her book Madonna said, "good let them see it and let them go to their parents and ask them about it." (Incidentally, only a vulture with extreme chutzpah can author a "book" like S-E-X & then a series of fairytales for the kiddies!)

Madonna's book was released to coincide with Madonna's latest CD, "Erotica." Around this time WEA pressed the "Erotica" picture disc which is considered the Holy Grail for Madonna collectors! ...The album was again an entirely new genre for Madonna who produced the songs. The album, like the single for "Erotica" and the book were all very s*xually charged. The video was directed by Fabien Baron and withdrawn from MTV because as Kurt Loder said during its premiere, "what you are about to see is the music video by arguably the most famous person in the world Madonna, this video depicts s*xual acts between consenting adults. Some are not bothered by this, others are repelled by this. That is why MTV is not showing this video during regular rotation."

When Madonna blasted Sinead O'Conner for daring to rip up a picture of the Holy Father on coast-to-coast American Television it was really the straw the broke the camel's back because no one wanted to hear Madonna defend the Pope. The following month Madonna went on a huge media blitz in commemoration of her CD, book and single. She was again dressed as Little Bow Peep on Sweden's "7 till 9" program where she again tried to justify her actions. But, by now everyone was more than willing to burn Little Bow Peep at the stake!

"Deeper and Deeper" was released on December 8, 1992 and became a Number One hit all over the world! The song charted on Billboard's Hot 100 at #7. In the "Deeper and Deeper" video Madonna stays with her S-E-X theme and enjoys eating a banana while a muscle man dances around in his knickers. This also marks the last time Madonna and her former BFF Sandra Bernhard (who had a cameo in the video) would speak for nearly 10 years; because there was some very bad blood between the 2!

Madonna had 2 movies in 1993: "Body of Evidence" and "Dangerous Game." One was worse than the next and during this time Madonna received some of the most vicious and venomous reviews of her entire career. "When Madonna falls down and was killed in the movie all applauded and laughed and probably wished that it was really happening," one critic from The Post wrote about "Body of Evidence." Madonna complained to Juliette Honen "the ludicrous thing is that they are all writing these 30 page articles about the end of me."

In September 1993 Madonna went on her final World Tour for nearly 8 years, The Girlie Show. Although considerably less controversial than The Blond Ambition Tour, Madonna's latest singing extravaganza wasn't without scandal. When Madonna's tour came to Puerto Rico Madonna caused a stir when it was reveled that she danced over the country's sacred flag after rubbing it over her crotch! "Please don't stand by for Madonna" read the headline of the Daily News when Madonna's concert blazed into town on October 14, 1993.

"Like Madonna's music or not - you have to give her credit for the inescapable fact that she set her own agenda, worked to her own rules and conceived her own strategies," Glenn A. Baker wrote of Madonna in the Australian magazine MiNDFOOD, recently. In a career that spans the course of 3 decades, countless number one singles, 6 world tours, over 2 dozen motion pictures, more than 60 music videos, 21 full-length records, multiple lovers, 2 marriages, millions and millions of fans from as far as the eye can see, tens of thousands of magazine covers, and more than half a ton of bleach, not to mention truckloads of conical braziers, lacy bustiers, crucifixes, bolero jackets, oversized hoop-earnings, navy blue berets, cowboy hats and in her newest incarnation ~ Black Chanel Boxing Gloves...Is it any wonder that Madonna is not just The Most Successful Artist Ever but also The Most Famed Person in the Entire History of Popular Culture? ...Over the last 15 years, with the sale of more than a quarter of a Billion Records, Madonna has undoubtedly proven that she is not just a catalyst but The Preeminent Performer of The New Millennium - & - The Most Achieved Material Girl in The Whole Stratosphere...!
