Music reviews of Happy Together

Music Review: review
Rating: 2 Stars

Not to be confused with the equally obscure and unknown late 1970s power pop band out of New Jersey, or the U.S. Apple Corps ... Yeah, this one is a complete obscurity. Good luck finding any trace of it online.

So how do you undertake any kind of research on something like this one? Well there's always speculation. Judging by the hairstyles, garb and song covers, this appears to be an early-1970s release (probably no later than 1973). It's clearly a private press vanity project (no label or catalog number) and again judging by the the pictures and the track listing I'm guessing these folks were in some sort of Christian high school - though the cover photo showing the four girls in Army jackets is kind of an oxymoron. Entitled "Happy Together", the album was produced by Herschell Kitchens and featured a mixture of popular hits and a couple unknown tracks which were apparently written by friends of the band ('Pane' credited to Gregg Greenway and 'As the Sea' written by Kathi Misenhamer). Since the front cover features four women, I'm guessing the line up was Karen Curtis, Karla Gibson, Janet Holiman, and Rhonda Roark with musical support from friends Sherrill Kendall on guitar, keyboardist Kay Mooney, and drummer Steve Whalen.

Musically the album was divided between a side of what you'd label 'Jesus Music' and a side of secular tunes. Side one tracks like 'Hymn', 'Well, Well, Well' and 'Howl My Soul' were acoustic tunes that spotlighted the women's nice group harmonies. If you've ever gone to a Catholic folk mass you've heard something similar. Pretty, but hardly life changing. Even though the included somewhat tentative keyboards and drumming from Mooney and Whalden, sonically the five secular side two tracks didn't sound a great deal different from the religious numbers. The emphasis was again on the women's sweet, but largely anonymous group vocals and if you had to pick out a standout performance it was likely to be their cover of The Turtles' 'Happy Together'. Not that their version was anything great, rather it had kind of a weird, lounge act charm. Certainly not an album for everyone out there, but there will be some folks who get off on this one.
