Music Review: Rated the Best Ever in Japan's Rolling Stone...

This is the 2nd album by the great Happy End. They had 3 studio albums and a few posthumous live albums of which one is good. The box set that came out a few years back is highly recommended. This album here is a classic! I was excited to hear this in the film "Lost In Translation"...i "grew up" with this album. Every song is great and the lyrics, while all in Japanese are very poetic. Nice harmonies, very original songwriting, and if you fancy acoustic folk-rock music, this is one of the best. On a recent jaunt to Japan i noticed that now Rolling Stone is publishing a Japanese version of its magazine. In it had the greatest 100 rock albums of Japan. This was number one!
Happy End and RC Succession were very different from each other, but both were unique and challenging. If you like this and their first album titled "Happy End" (same title as their last album too), then you might like Kagawa Ryo's "Kyokun", which features Happy End as the backing band.
The songs are all so amazing and original. The 2nd song features the great Komazawa Hiroki on the pedal steel, one of the best at the instrument. The bass sound that Hosono Haruomi gets on this song is unbelievable. The heaviness of the bass even on the original LP sounds years ahead of its time. I would love to find out how Hosono got that big sound in the studio back then in '71. The first 4 songs are classics. Other highlights include "Natsu Nandesu" and "Hana Ichimonme". By the way, Hosono debuted with a band called Apryl Fool back in 1969 and played on numerous albums by Takada Wataru and Minami Masato and many others. Matsumoto Takashi was on a lyric writing pinnacle during this time. Just beautiful song writing altogether. For certain, this deserves 5 stars. Highly Recommended!!
