Music Review: not bad, not bad at all

I've written a track by track comment on the songs. Hope it'll be useful!

1. Strong Enough To Break
Really like the congas incorporated into this song. Great vocal compatability and harmonies are real tight, especially at the "Maybe..." parts. Great chorus.

2. Dancin' In The Wind
The guys trying to experiment with distortion? Least favourite track in the album, but the chorus bit where they harmonise is pretty neat. Ok, so I'm a sucker for harmonies.

3. Penny & Me
First single from the album. Great choice for a single. It has a sort of like a carefree feel to it. Sounds light and breezy. This song shows how much they've grown and the type of music to expect from this album. Should try listening to the acoustic version cos it sort of like complements the "plugged" version.

4. Underneath
First slow song of the album. Bit heavy on the drums but love the cello in the background. To have written this with Matthew Sweet in only one and a half hours is truly amazing.

5. Misery
Lead vocals by Zac. Nice to hear a different voice singing lead. Bittersweet cos the lyrics are kind of sad but it's sung in a happy way. Interesting how they pull off the contradiction. The "Do do do" parts are kinda special.

6. Lost Without Each Other
Great upbeat song with nice drums. Taylor sounds good here but the lyrics aren't all that great. Sill love the feel you get when listening to this song tho. Good song for head bopping! And look out for the guitar solo!

7. When You're Gone
Another slow one. Don't really fancy this one either. Find that the chorus is too repetitive. Lyrics-wise, it's quite commendable, in particular the verses- shows maturity.

8. Broken Angel
Pretty weird intro. Zac sings lead again in this slow number. It's a beautiful haunting ballad and this drummer pulls it off splendidly. He shows much emotion and control. I like to set the speaker balance to the right at the start of the song. This makes it so that only his voice can be heard, minus the piano. Chords are pretty simple. But it's amazing how simple chords can be made into such a great slow track. Lyrics are kinda deep. Quite metaphorical if you ask me.

9. Deeper
Michelle Branch sings back up on this one with Isaac on lead. His voice is actually not bad. It's pnice that all three of them sing lead cos it gives the album more variety. Michelle does a great job and blends in well, adding that oomph to the song. Pity this wasn't a duet cos this would have been a fine single choice. Not to say that the song isn't great as it is, but having a duet packs in that extra punch.

10. Get Up And Go
Another upbeat track in the vein of Lost Without Each Other. Reminds me of good ol' fashioned rock. Nice guitar riffs. Especially love the drums during the second verse (syncopated? Can drums be played that way? Dunno if it's the right term tho)when it goes "We'll get away be in love..." Pretty inventive.

11. Crazy Beautiful
Horns (does this cover trumpets?) are abundant in this song which makes it really different. Nice beat, great guitar work, neat brass and quite good how they incorporate piano into all that.

12. Hey
A fun song. Talks about materialism. At least that's what I think. The build up to the chorus really rocks! Prefer the acoustic version tho.

13. Believe
Slow number. I find the song too repetitive. From the chorus (too many "Believe"s) right down to the chords they play. The ending is a little off as Taylor tries to sing softly and in a whispering manner (or at least it sounds like that) Wasn't pulled off that well.

14. Lulla Belle
Ok I don't know if this can be counted as the 14th track. It's actually a hidden track that goes on after Believe. However, before you get to this song, there's like a short snippet of Crazy Beautiful with some radio cum talk show cum news thingy going on in the background. Which is special actually cos it gives it a nice twist.
Lulla Belle has Zac singing lead again. This song is very lullaby like (that's why it's called Lulla Belle?). Zac is once again quite emotive on this one. He sings slow songs quite well. His higher range (as compared to Taylor's) sounds quite nice on its own. Pity the cd inlay didn't have lyrics of this one.

As the album progresses, it's hard not to note how much these guys have grown. Particularly in the instruments department. This is a great comeback album after being out of the music scene for four long years!

The album that I bought also came with a bonus vcd. Yup, mine??s not dvd. Neway it features live performances from the brothers three during their Underneath acoustic live tour and also a video featurette, Underneath Underneath. Neat!
