Music reviews of Shout It Out

Music Review: Mediocre

As a fan since 1997, I can say this album is too Hanson for it's own good. It's all a bit repetitive and overall unimpressive. There appears to be no push to create something different from anything else they've ever written. I understand they have a signature sound, but that doesn't mean so many of the songs have to sound so similar. Several of the songs are just flat and mediocre. The songs I actually like are still mediocre in my opinion- I am just a little biased in the way that I enjoy them.

The songs I loved (which turns out are the only two ballads on the album):

Use Me Up (Track 8)- Zac is definitely a balladeer at heart. Even though this song pales in comparison to previously heard versions, it is still a beautifully written and sung song despite there being a bit of what seems a lack of emotion.

Me Myself and I (Track 12)- Where "Use Me Up" lacked emotion, Taylor really lays it on thick, and the end result is another simple, gorgeous and thankfully not overpowering ballad about a break-up. It screams Hanson, but in this instance that's just fine. They kill at ballads.

Songs I could (almost) listen to until the end:

Kiss Me When You Come Home (Track 3)- While I actually was unimpressed the first time I heard this several weeks ago (when it was released for listen on the internet), it grew on me. I'm a sucker for songs that start with a drum solo, so the fact that this one does is a plus. I'm also a fan of the first verse, and the chorus is one of the catchiest on the album despite the extreme levels of cheesiness.

Carry You There (Track 4)- The things that keep me listening are the chorus (which the song starts right off with), and towards the end, their harmonies are lovely on the repetitive "I'll carry you there, I will carry you there".

And I Waited (Track 7)- This song starts off with a killer drum solo, so in that respect I, again, may be biased. I am also a huge fan of Zac's voice, so that adds to the appeal of this song. However, this is another song that pales in comparison to a previously heard version (which happened to be live), so that initial love still resides and carried over to this studio version.

Voice in the Chorus (Track 11)- This could be here simply because I really enjoyed Taylor's singing which did little to impress me on most of the songs. But overall the song is pretty catchy and pleasant. I can't help but think, though, that if this were on, say, "Underneath" (which is the album this song is most comparable to), it would have been one of my least favorite songs.

Songs that impress me very little or not at all:

Waiting For This (Track 1)- While it starts off promising with a fun bit of piano and then the entrance of a cool guitar riff it quickly goes downhill. Taylor doesn't sound his best, and the harmonies on the chorus are off. The lyrics are what can only be described as "generic Hanson." Unimpressive.

Thinkin' 'Bout Somethin' (Track 2)- When I first heard it back when they released it on the internet, I was able to dance to it, but it got old quickly. I initially enjoyed the cowbell at the beginning, but anytime I hear that cowbell now, I groan. Also, Taylor's voice sounds kind of awful. This song is so annoying to me at this point that MMMBop would be a relief.

Give A Little (Track 5)- This song is just five kinds of cheesy, and nothing about it is appealing. It's extremely cringe-inducing, and I would like to tell Taylor he doesn't have to force his voice so much because we all know he's got a beautiful voice.

Make It Out Alive (Track 6)- The instrumentation at the beginning is really great, and the chorus is pretty catchy. However, the verses are unremarkable, and it takes so long to get to the chorus I get bored and have to switch songs.

These Walls (Track 9)- Absolutely nothing remarkable about this song. The beginning doesn't grab my attention, Taylor's voice is emotionless and once again, the verses are so boring that I forget that the chorus is kind of nice, so I find myself skipping to another song.

Musical Ride (Track 10)- One of Zac's least impressive performances. In fact I'd say his voice is annoying which is something I rarely think. The harmonies are practically non-existent. It sounds like each boy was recorded separately and then those recordings were layered together with no care as to if it sounded good. The singing doesn't seem to fit with the instrumentation well either.

HANSON's fifth studio album, Shout It Out, is a collection of finely crafted, R&B-flavored pop, an homage to the music that inspired HANSON when they started out in their hometown of Tulsa, Oklahoma - 60's soul and 70's songwriters. The album produced and written exclusively by the band is augmented with special guests: Funk Brothers bassist Bob Babbitt, who played on some of Motown's greatest hits, and horn arranger Jerry Hey, who worked with Michael Jackson, Quincy Jones, Earth, Wind and Fire, and many more.
