Music Review: 3.5 stars, impressive but kind of annoying.

First off, heres my history of being a Hanson fan. I didn't like them when they 1st came out, probabbly because I was 11 and my older brother told me they were bad and I didn't think for myself yet, then I got hooked on the single "This Time Around", ended up buying the album "this time around" the day it came out and was completley blown away by how good they were. I later ended up buying "Middle Of Nowhere" and realized it was pretty good too. The reasons I bought this album are I like Hanson, it was used ... and I wanted to hear the original "MMMBop". Okay, now to the album!The songs are pretty good for the most part but the vocals get kind of annoying. Taylors voice is even higher on this album than MON and its kind of annoying, Ike sings a lot on this album and his voice was already low and sounded good except that he didn't exactly know how to use it yet. The songs themselves are impressive. They are very well structured. They're not as good as the studio albums songs, but what do you really expect? I can't believe that they were so young here and could write this stuff. The songs I like most are "Stories" and "Surley as The Sun" as well as "MMMBop". "Soldier" is really stupid but well structured. Also, I want to add that lots of critics say that the dust brothers are what made "MMMBop" a hit, that isn't true at all, the only thing the dust brothers did to change "MMMbop" was add 2 seconds of scratching. You can hardly tell the difference between MON "MMMBop" and 3 car garage "MMMBop". So, overall this album is full of mostly good-but not great songs and semi-annoying vocals. If you're interested in seeing how Hanson began, buy this.

HANSON 3 CAR GARAGE: INDIE RECORDINGS 95 - 96The surprise of 3 Car Garage, which collects pre-fame recordings by the mighty under-18 trio, isn't in the somewhat rough production, but how well-formed the Hanson aesthetic was before they met song doctors and the Dust Brothers. That production team streamlined "MmmBop" from the perceptibly slower version here; it was the boys, though, who tried their hands at a "Sweet Jane" soundalike ("Stories") and the pomp-rock play of "Day Has Come." Isaac, Taylor, and Zac take everything with such honest enthusiasm, it's clear that they would've set up amps and drums with or without their parents' encouragement. The place to start a Hanson collection is still last year's Middle of Nowhere, but these kids' Garage days are more proof that their millions of fans aren't wrong. --Rickey Wright
