Music Review: A tasty treat baked by Hans Zimmer

I chuckled when I read that on the packaging. "Baked by Hans Zimmer"
That sums up the general attitude towards this summer blockbuster score. It's fun, silly and not to be taken too seriously.
I've heard some reviewers say that Zimmer did a good job of emulating Danny Elfman. I disagree. Zimmer's score is much more robust and thematicaly interesting than most of Elfman's work of late. (I personally believe Elfman to be extremely overrated) It doesn't sound like Elfman, or Zimmer for that matter. But Zimmer makes great use of the "Simpson's Theme" in such tracks as "Thank You Boob Lady" and "Lead...not to read""
There is also some truly great, old-fashioned action music to be found. Tracks like "You Doomed us all Again" and "Trapped Like Carrots" could easily be mistaken for the latest Bruce Willis action vehicle. There is great variety in the assembly of this album as well. It has a good flow, going from tender moments with the "Lisa" material then busting into the surf track "Release the hounds" (Strangely, the track title is totally wrong there)
Zimmer also busts into Copeland-esque Americana for "Why Does Everything I Whip Leave Me", fluffy over-the-top female vocals for "Bart's Doodle" and even a tender Piano piece that is so effective it almost seems out of place in a Simpson's film. But again, great variety is found here.
There is also a totally solid secondary theme for Homer that gets a good workout throughout the score and comes away being just as memorable as the main "Simpsons Theme"
And then there is "Spider Pig" This has to be one of the funniest damn things I've heard on a film score in quite a while and I was delighted that they included it on the end of the disc. Makes me laugh every time.
I purchased the limited editon "Donut Packaging" complete with "Essence of Donut" - I'm not kidding, when you open it up, it actually smells like a donut! The plastic donut itself looks just like the one on the poster, but lacks a center hole. So, it looks like a weird jelly donut. Anyway, when you pop it open, the disc is firmly attached inside. The box even resembles a Krispy Creme kind of design. And the booklet is included with some interesting liner notes from the director.
The only thing keeping me from giving this package 5 stars is the inclusion of a terrible dance remix of the Simpson's theme at the end of the disc. "Recklessly Impulsive" Whoever decided to put such a horrid track at the end of such a well assembled album should be sealed in a glass dome and never allowed to leave. Seriously, what were they thinking? Did they actually expect it to hit the charts or something? It's one of those baffling marketing stratgies that leaves you wondering "Who do they think their audience is?"
Anyhoo, it's good. Buy it.
