Music Review: A Mixed Bag of Beautiful vs. Redundancy and Packaging

But, alas, some bad yields to the good. As mentioned before, Roll Tide is seven of the greatest minutes in film score history, but if you've heard those seven minutes, then the rest of the score is somewhat negligible. Everything else is redundant background synthesizers, mundane repetitions of the admittedly beautiful theme (though with little development), and intermitent forays into the strident and pounding brass that has come to be associated with Zimmer and his protégés. Moreover, to make matters worse, the CD is a lopsided endeavor that does more to frustrate than to please. With five tracks that range from two minutes to twenty-three minutes, there is little consistency. Fortunately, the best track is a modest (?) seven minutes, but that doesn't negate the hindrance of the rest of the score.

So, what conclusions can I make claim to in regards to this score? Well...The CD is a poorly constructed and bothersome attempt for Zimmer to display the "suites" of which he is so fond, but which the consumer will more often than not find impractical. The underscore can be boring at times but can shine at others with a truly magnificent theme that exceeds most action scores ever created; but--the BIG but--this theme is better expressed and more comprehensive in the concluding track which accurately represents all of the interesting material from the score. In short, there can be no better recommendation to the consumer than to download an MP3 of the track Roll Tide, and save his money for another purchase. That one track will satisfy you better than the whole CD; but if worst comes to worst, I'm almost willing to admit that the one track IS worth the price of the album. The decision, however, is yours.
