Music reviews of Gladiator

Music Review: An Inspiring and All-Around Beautiful Composition!
Rating: 5 Stars

I saw the movie, Gladiator a few years ago in theaters with my dad. Although I loved the movie and thought it was amazing, nothing "stuck with me" more than the haunting and completely melodic music.
The score opens with "Progeny", the same song that opens the movie for those of you who have seen it. I call it a mysterious ballad, lonely in the beginning with Commodus' theme, and then a pretty Spanish guitar towards the end. Immediately after is "The Wheat", a short, desert-like Arabian tune with a single woman humming a melody. The end grows into "The Battle", a 10-minute masterpiece that made the movie in my opinion. Wonderful harmonic instruments and percussion begin the song, and within a minute they disappear leaving the drums and the Spanish guitar. A man vocalizes for a moment, and the guitar returns, strumming a sort of insane little riff than eventually turns into the battle cry of the Roman soldiers. Trumpets blare, drums blast, cymbals crash, stringed instruments begin to tone down the entire song. A little echo-y thing occurs with the trumpets and horns, then this explodes into more percussion and the undeniable theme of Gladiator. The tempos and time signature changes and the song ends miraculously and intensely.
"Earth" seems to be the prettiest song, heard literally from the beginning of the movie to the end. It doesn't contain many instruments, but the solos are so pretty. First, I'm assuming a woodwind plays it, followed by the most beautiful trumpet solo I've heard in awhile. It never ceases to make me hum along.
"Sorrow" is the song played when Maximus finds his wife and son dead (sorry if you haven't seen the movie and I ruined it, but it happens early on so it's not like a surprise). It focuses mainly on the miserable choral of a single woman. Then it slides into "To Zucchabar", a flowing piece with a compelling bass and a fluid melody.
"Patricide" is the helpless, depressing harmony that occurs during the "death" of Marcus Aurelis. Following is the short "The Emperor is Dead", with the melody being played on what I believe is an instrument called a 'Yan Chin'.
"The Might of Rome" is the most obvious of all the songs with it's clearly 'Roman' style. It is played during a gladiator battle scene, very tribal and brutal, straying far from the flourish of the other songs and being stripped of all splendor. It starts slow and drum-driven, then increases tempo to a climactic ending.
"Strength and Honor" is a melancholic yet triumphant panoply.
Both "Reunion" and "Slaves to Rome" strike me as really being two parts to the same song because of how smoothly they flow into each other, but "Slaves..." is way more dramatic and a very, for lack of a better term, bitterly jubilant ode, later drowning to the quiet Commodus theme.
"Barbarian Horde" is another take on "The Battle", only this time in the Colisseum and as gladiators before the valor of Rome, so I need not describe it further.
"Am I Not Merciful?" is my third favorite. It's very dark, very gloomy. This is played at one of the most sad scenes in the movie, during which Commodus threatens his own sister and her son (his own nephew, the heir to the throne) and yells at her when she has truly done nothing wrong. It's slow, yes, but very powerful.
"Elysium" features a woman singing as she did in the beginning of the movie, but more hopeful and bright. This song changes paces into "Honor Him", the conclusion of Gladiator and return of the recurring theme to "Earth", but more jubilant and strong.
Then the last song, "Now We Are Free", a more modern-day sounding piece with full vocals and instrumentation to complete the saga of Gladiator.
