Music Review: Rare original recordings for film music afficionados...

These original scoring sessions from Hans J. Salter still sound remarkably fresh in this special Intrada release. All the recordings are monaural and some had to be taken directly from optical sound units, but none of the music presented is ruined by over processing. Salter's orchestrations are classic once heard, and his music can now be appreciated for the overwhelming contribution it made to films that would have been laughable without it. He created scores that were the emotional core of the Universal horror films he worked on, but his talent for variety is represented here by the 20-minute suites from THE BLACK SHIELD OF FALWORTH and HITLER. Notable on the score for THE INCREDIBLE SHRINKING MAN is Ray Anthony on trumpet. This disc deserves a spot in any serious film music collector's library, and it should be quite a treat for mid-century sci-fi movie fans.
