Music reviews of The Complete Hank Williams \Music Review: Great set of material, but packaging and sound quality leave something to be desired. Rating: 3 Stars
Right off the bat, let me say that I reviewed this product way back in 2007 under the title "Paranoia is not healthy." You might remember it. Basically, I was only 16 at the time and hadn't yet seen it's better to write reviews involving the truth than to sugar coat the review because of my bias for the subject matter and make it sound like everything is completely flawless. In that review I said that the Packaging does not damage the CD's, and I also said that this was the best sound quality I had ever found of Hank. Now that I am a little older, I can look back and say that those 2 statements were not entirely true. Now onto the new and improved review.
Packaging: This set comes in a long rectangular, hard cardboard outer case to house the insides, which include a book which holds the 10 cds, a book of rare photos, essays and quotes, and post cards. The outside box for the most part is pretty good, except that if you stand this box upright on a shelf, the bottom of the box tends to tear on the corners due to the weight of the contents, so it's better to lay it down flat. The booklet which houses the CD's is one of my major pet peeves of this set. Each CD is held in place with a little cardboard hole. The problem is that the hole the CD's are in is very small so that when you remove one, it rubs against the cardboard and actually scratches the CD. It's mild at first, but after you remove and replace each CD a few times, these small scratches turn into large scratches and appear all around the CD. For this reason I bought a pack of Jewel Cases for about 3 dollars to put the CD's in. Sure that's not expensive, but odds are that you've already spent close to or over 100 dollars on this set and don't want to spend any more money on something even as benign as Jewel Cases. The packaging removes 1 star. We're now down to 4.
Sound quality: Like I said at the top, I once said these CD's sound better than any other CD I've heard of Hank. This was before I discovered a thing called "The Loudness War." The truth is that while these CD's do sound fine by normal standards, they are a bit over-maximized and compressed. The result of this is that when you turn the volume up too high, you start to hear distortion. They're also just a bit too loud. I compared this set from 1998 to the Original Singles Collection Plus from 1991. The Original Singles Collection definitely comes out on top. No noticeable distortion at higher volume levels, more dynamic range, and not overly loud. But like I said, The Complete Hank Williams is not at all unlistenable by normal standards, and is actually a lot better than any compilations released in the last 5 years. As time goes on, Record Companies are producing louder and more compressed CDs. Do yourself a favor and try to buy un-remastered CD's, no matter who it is. This is where the 2nd star went in this review. Not horrible at all, but just a little too loud and compressed.
Songs: Finally something to brag on. Anybody with ears is likely to have heard a Hank Williams song, and those who have usually will agree that he was one of a kind. His songs have endured for over 50 years, and those were just the ones that were released way back then, which was over 60 singles. But this set includes 225 recordings on 10 discs. These recordings are everything from from all the singles Hank cut, as Hank Williams or Luke The Drifter, alternate takes of songs, live takes of songs, completely unreleased material, which is actually very plentiful, or even a few interviews. The original singles come on discs 1-4, and they are great. They're the songs of Hank we all know and love, but the real prizes of this set are what's on Discs 5-10. This is where all the unreleased, rare, and live tracks can be found. In my opinion, some of the unreleased material found on this set could have rivaled his best known material. The live cuts are nothing short of spectacular either. I'm usually not a fan of live material, but to hear an artist like Hank Williams in his element, doing what he did best, is truly astounding. What more can I say other than Hank definitely knew music, and he knew it well.
Price: Okay, this is the part most likely to put potential buyers on the defensive. New from Amazon, this set fluxuates from about 95 dollars, up to 169 dollars. While either of these prices is a stretch for your wallet, especially in these hard times, one must consider the amount of stuff they get. 225 recordings and a rather large book of rare photos and quotes is quite a bit of bang for your buck. If one were to purchase all these recordings on MP3 format, (Yuck!), which seems to be so popular today, it would be right at 225 dollars since most MP3 files go for .99 cents a song. But what one must remember is that this set was meant for the die-hard fan, not a the casual listener. If you are infact casual about Hank, this set is definitely not for you. But if you are like me, and must have every recording available, than this set is a definite addition to your collection. For a casual listener, or one that is new to Hank's music, I suggest the Original Singles Plus Collection. You get 84 different recordings on 3 cd's for just a little over 25 dollars, maybe less if you buy from an Amazon Merchant, which I did.
All in all, I give this Collection 3 stars. Packaging and sound quality are a little sub-standard, but for a Die-Hard Hank Williams fan, this set is a must.

Description of The Complete Hank Williams \Hank Williams rose to prominence at the exact middle of the 20th century, and this fact helps to explain why he remains such a unique figure in country music. Put simply, he is the thread that connects (however loosely) Jimmie Rodgers and Garth Brooks. This 10-CD mother lode brilliantly captures the essence of the man and his spellbinding music. The official studio takes provide the foundation, while the demos, outtakes, and live recordings are the putty in the gaps. --Marc Greilsamer After so many years of so many haphazard, oft-overdubbed, slapdash Hank Williams reissues, this lavish package seems truly an embarrassment of riches. Imagine being able to dip in and listen to the unadorned music from the whole of this pioneer's musical career, along with preserved historical spoken words. His career truly represents the major turning point in country music's history, and this box set--music and densely packed attendant memorabilia--is as much a social history of America at mid-20th century as it is a music document. Williams's recording career lasted only six years and he died tragically at age 29, but he left a musical and emotional legacy that grows year by year. To sketch the basics of The Complete Hank Williams: There are 10 CDs encompassing 225 cuts from all parts of his career--the demos, the radio shows, the Opry debut triumph. Musical revelations abound.... --Chet Flippo
