Music Review: Outstanding

I'm a huge fan of Iain Matthews, and particularly like his early 90s material, so I was intrigued by this trio which combined Iain with Michael Fracasso and long-time Matthews collaborator Mark Hallman. (The band is named after a scenic waterhole near Austin).
How does it measure up? Very well indeed. In fact, this is an excellent album which can be recommended to anyone who loves folk-rock.
Of the thirteen tracks here, Iain and Michael each deliver lead vocals on four, with Mark leading on the remaining five. Apart from the opening song - which is far too 'conventional country' for me - this album really works. The overall standard is extremely high, and the album is refreshingly innovative.
Despite this consistency, there are some outstanding tracks here which deserve a special mention. 'Imperfect Angel' is right up there with the best material that Iain has ever written and performed. Much the same can be said of 'On The Inside' (which features Bradley Kopp on guitar) and 'Evening Sun'. Michael's 'One That Got Away' is a lovely track, as is Mark's 'Jewel'. Michael's 'Eye on the Road' is superb, one of the best tracks on a generally outstanding album.
These are some of the highs, but overall consistency is tremendous. It's unlikely now that we'll hear more from Hamilton Pool, but we can treasure this one.
