Music reviews of Do It for Love

Music Review: A Welcomed Addition To The Hall & Oates Catalog
Rating: 4 Stars

I've really been on the fence about this latest release from Daryl and John. When it first came out I tended to agree with the critcs who said it was a far cry from their classic material of the 70's and 80's. Then it grew on me. Then I thought the first half of the disc was fantastic, while the second half suffered from a repetitive weakness. Now, almost six months after it's release, I think it's a strong addition (though not as strong as their last release, 1997's MARIGOLD SKY) to Hall & Oates' body of work. Opening with the infectious "Man On A Mission", Hall's voice just soars over the acoustic guitar and percussion-heavy mix. The song sucks you in from the first few bars and doesn't let go. Ranking in the Top 20 of all-time best H&O singles, the track kick-starts the disc on an upbeat, fun note. "Do It For Love" is a romantic, R&B-inflected gem, the sort of cut that no one does better than Hall & Oates. "Someday We'll Know" has to be my favorite cut - each of us has been in this position....a romance that just didn't work out, much to our amazement and bewilderment. With it's delicate lyrics ("Does anybody know the way to Atlantis?/Or what the wind says when she cries/I'm speeding by the place where I met you/For the 97th time" and "I bought a ticket back to where I came from/I watched my past crash in the sea/If I could ask you just one question/Why aren't you here with me?") and layered, caressing vocals (featuring "trio" partner Todd Rundgren!), this is romantic pop perfection at it's best! It doesn't get much better than this! "Forever For You" is sort of run of the mill, with kind of a boy-band vibe to it. It comes across as a Backsync outtake, and ultimately falls way below Hall & Oates high standards. "Life's Too Short" has a nice, easy groove to it, one that really has you moving by song's end. If someone had told me a few years ago that the core instrument on a H&O album would be an acoustic guitar, I would have laughed. However, that's very much the case with much of DO IT FOR LOVE, and nowhere does it showcase more how well that works than on "Life's Too Short." Brilliant! "Getaway Car" just floats out of the speakers, with it's sultry, sensuous lead vocal by Daryl Hall and it's sweet, longing-filled lyrics ("All we need is the open road/More fuel for the fire inside us/Steer us on to lands unknown/We can leave this world behind us"). "Make You Stay" is another boy band reject. With weak lyrics, posseur guitar and synthetic vocals...well, the less said the better! "Miss DJ" also tries too hard. Any song that constantly has to remind us how "funky" it is.....isn't! "(She) Got Me Bad" is another acoustic-driven ballad, but it's also more than that; it's delicacy is only enhanced by the masterful vocal arrangement. It soars....and swoops....and, ultimately, showcases why these two men are the most successful duo of all time. "Breath Of Your Life" has a Michael Jackson cast-off vibe to it, paling in comparison to much of the other material on DO IT FOR LOVE. "Intuition" floats along on a smooth, easy-going R&B-laced groove, all layered vocals, sparkling falsettos and romantic, honest lyrics. "Heartbreak Time", unfortunately, has a been-there, done-that feel to it that it just can't rise above. Things rebound nicely though with "Something About You", one of the most honest, down to earth tracks recorded this year. All stripped down arrangement and tender vocals, this is a bare bones ballad that just sparkles. DO IT FOR LOVE closes with the clunker "Love In A Dangerous Time", a downbeat ode to romance in the age of AIDS that was also featured on John Oates' solo PHUNK SHUI disc last year. All I can say is, this version is only marginally better than the original and, if they really needed to include it here, they should have buried it somewhere in the center of the disc instead of having it be the last thing we hear and remember. All in all, though, I'd say around 70% of DO IT FOR LOVE is among some of Hall & Oates' best, so check it out....you'll see that these guys are still Men On A Mission!

Description of Do It for Love

2003 album, their first in six years, it's everything you love about them. U-Watch Records.
VH-1's Behind the Music may signify the final curtain for some acts, but Hall and Oates aren't so easily confined to the dustbins of pop history. With a chart run that spanned most of the '70s and '80s, Philadelphia's most enduring purveyors of blue-eyed soul went on to keep a fairly low profile until "Do It for Love," a newly recorded track for their 2002 VH-1 retrospective, crept up to the top of the adult contemporary charts. Nearly a year later, the duo reprises the track and title on a full album that aims to recapture the best aspects of their glory days. Among its highlights are a sublime cover of New Radical's "Someday We'll Know" that teams them up with War Babies collaborator Todd Rundgren, and the funky "Miss DJ," a playful pop confection that avoids the excessive novelty of their more calculated '80s hits. After three decades, Hall's remains one of pop's most expressive voices. And while the album as a whole may lack the edge and energy of the pair's earliest work, it's still a promising collection from a rock duo that's earned a place in Philly soul history. --Bill Forman
