Music Review: Haitink's Stravinsky earns well deserved high marks

Bernard Haitink recorded Stravinsky's famous ballets "The Firebird", "Petrouchka" and "Le Sacre du Printemps" with the London Philharmonic (not the Concertgebouw Orchestra) for Philips in the 1970s. The latter two are what appear on this Philips "Eloquence" CD, and they are very fine, indeed. Haitink does not push tempos and go over the top as do many conductors, especially in the "Danse sacrale" which concludes "Le Sacre", but rather takes just enough time to let events in the ballets unfold naturally. However, tempos never drag: momentum never lets down, and things never get boring. There is a sense of "rightness" about Haitink's Stravinsky, which you will sense when listening to it.
If you like "Petrouchka" or "Le Sacre" on the wild and wooly side, look elsewhere. Monteux and the Boston Symphony have a certain authority, but his "Le Sacre" is mono (1951, RCA) and there are some odd tempo shifts in "Petrouchka" some may find disturbing. Karel Ancerl/Czech Philharmonic (Supraphon) are excellent in "Le Sacre" and really wild in the "Danse sacrale" (I hear high violin parts in the closing pages I don't hear in other recordings) and either of Bernstein's "Petrouchka" recordings (New York Philharmonic, CBS; Israel Philharmonic, DG) are very fine. But Haitink is one of the best, and very satisfying.
