Music Review: Cornucopia Without the Corn

If you like original, thoughtful, expressive, simple but powerful music, you don't want to miss this album. If you're familiar with Guy Clark, you know why. If you aren't, this is a great introduction. Those looking for mindless cliches in formulaic pop country and butt-bumping rhythms won't like the album. It's too deep, too meaningful, too thoughtful or just not what they like. People open to various types of music that can stand on their own without the prop of a particular genre will find a goldmine here.
I grew up listening to music and I've been playing and writing my own songs since 1973: Guy Clark is the finest poet/songwriter that I've ever heard. His descriptions are real, gritty and poignant. I don't love every song on this collection but there's not a weak one in the bunch. Some of them are the most amazing and touching songs I've heard in my entire life, which is drawing nigh onto six decades at this time.
This album includes bluegrass, country and folk. The perfectly written "L A Freeway" and the poignant "She Ain't Going Nowhere" stack up among the very best songs of all time. "Coat from the Cold" and "Fools for Each Other" are exceptionally good love songs, the kind of love songs that a man can sing and not feel like he's trying to act half his age. My wife, Randa, and I sing a lot of Guy Clark songs when doing our gigs in tiny local venues and they always elicit positive and powerful emotions. His story songs, of which there are several in this ensemble, are vivid and strong.
Guy Clark's remarkable capacity to blend powerful lines with memorable melodies shines on this album. His music is perfect for people who want something different, something original and worthwhile. Including his original Desperadoes Waiting for a Train; Texas 1947 (later covered by Johnny Cash); L.A. Freeway; Instant Coffee Blues; Don't Let the Sunshine Fool You; The Last Gunfighter Ballad , and more.Despite the misleading title, this collection is actually a straight (albeit reordered) reissue of Clark's first two records: 1975's landmark debut Old No. 1 and Texas Cookin' from the following year. Only one song from the latter title is missing, replaced by the "Fools for Each Other" single from 1978. Though he was in his early 30s when he recorded Old No. 1, Clark's keen, world-weary tales (and equally worn voice) belie his age. With simple arrangements and richly detailed narratives, the record has an air of resignation and melancholy, yet somehow manages to be comforting and uplifting. Texas Cookin' is a fine follow-up, but despite a number of high-profile guests, it never truly reaches the heights of its predecessor. Together, however, they form quite an impressive body of original songs, especially for only one year's worth of recording. --Marc Greilsamer
